Why do I have less power when I turn on the A/C?

I was just wondering why I have less acceleration power when I turn on the A/C with my 3vze,
everything still runs fine and the air blows nice and cold, but I can definitely tell that I have less power going up hills and low-end torque is less. Is this normal for an older vehicle, is there anything that I can do or repair/modify so that I do not lose any power when I turn on the A/C?

Also...1 more question related to the A/C, after I run the A/C for a bit, and then turn off the A/C and run the regular fan (even just a few minutes later), the air smells BAD, musty etc.
I have tried spraying the deodorant into the air intake below the windshield wipers, that worked for a bit, but 1) smells too strong, and 2) now everything still smells musty after using A/C.

THANKS for helping me with these 3vze A/C questions!

All A/C's pull power from the engine. If it's really bad, you might have an issue with your compressor (bearings going out) or the idler pulley bearings.

As far as the musty smell is concerned, you can try running the heater on high for about half an hour to dry everything out; that MIGHT help. Otherwise, you're pretty much going to have to disassemble the dash to open it up and see the issue. There is a thread on here somewhere about cleaning out your fan area & condenser behind the glovebox...

go get some lysol disinfectant spray with the scent of your choice and spray where your recirc sucks the air and spray down each vent then finally spray the outside vent(fan on high). do that every couple days untill the smell is gone. That smell could be mildew built up in your vents from a clogged drain or somthing blocking the drain. Its def not healthy and can make you sick. Thats why i choose somthing like lysol spray because it kills all that crap that makes it smell bad.

the fan and duct work get filthy, and the worst area is the condensation drain area. wet+dark+dirt=mold

Living in the PNW you really need to clean out the fan box sometimes, fir needs and other small crap get down in there and plug up the drain. Critters also like to get in there. People have pulled out nests before....Chemical treatments are temporary IMO at best...

Parasitic loss. I don't use mine so I pulled the belt off completely.

Actually, the latest Toyota HVAC designs on the hybrids are entirely electrically driven. I can leave the dog in the locked car on a Summer day with the a/c on full blast while running errands. There's no difference in perceived power output with it on. Expect to see similar systems spread throughout the lineup within the next five years.
