89 toyota body on 88 toyota frame/engine

my orig. toyota was an 89 toyota. It had a 22RE with 5 speed. I took the body off of the 89 toyota and put it onto an 88 toyota frame and engine(22RE and 5 speed). every thing went pretty well but I've got one harness connection between the engine harness and the body harness (located on the floor, passenger side, just above the computer.) I need help figguring out how to complete this connection. there are only two wires differnce. I swapped out the pins (simply following the wires colors) and the truck starts but shuts down within a few seconds. I'm pretty sure it's a wiring issue. any ideas / help would be greatly appreciated.

I would help, but I don't have a computer in mine. Best of luck! But my truck is also shutting down, so I guess were in the same boat huh?

sorry...ECU. I'm a conputer guy that has only built jeeps. I've come over to the dark side i guess you could say. by the way the engine harness is the orig. 85 harness but the cab harness is from the body of the 89. The ECU (computer) is from the 85 (matched with the 85 motor)

Are you using the 89's harness to run the 88's 22RE?

I think one issue is that the 88 had the old style "bent nose" 22RE and the 89 had the later "straight" throttle body 22RE...

so there are wiring differences?

I would only attempt to do that after comparing the wiring manuals for both vehicles.

Otherwise the PITA (but plug and play way) is to use the 88 harness in the 89 chassis...

There are also potential differences in the fuel injection systems.. Did you keep in ECU with the correct motor?

I'd chase those wires via FSM - maybe on the wiring schematics or the diagrams that show the routing of the harness in the truck body.

its the 88 engine harness to the 89 body harness. only 1 connector is differnt. it's a connector between the engine harness to the body harness. on the 89 toyota body harness their is a large black/red wire that the 88 body harness does not have. on the 89 that wire (through the 89 orig. engine harness) ends up being split and going to each of the fuel injectors. the 85 does not have this wire.

the only prob so far is that it will start and then die. what would be a good direction to trouble shoot the problem? that may be a way to get me into the right direction. In the mean time i'm working on the wiring diagrams.

If it starts and then dies try looking at this:

I?ve had two trucks that had this problem. Here?s what fixed it

Truck 1:
Bad wire going to fuel pump. Jump the B+ and the Fp connectors in the diagnostic box under the hood. You should now hear the fuel pump running. Start the truck and see if it?ll run. (I just left the jumper in and have been driving the truck with no probs)

Truck 2:
Same symptoms. Turned out to be a bad Igf wire going from the Ignitor on the coil to the ECU. There?s also an Igt wire going to the ECU. ECU can?t run the truck without these signals. (Usually shows up with code 14)

Check to make sure these circuits are working and connected. On my 91 Igf is Black-Yellow, Igt is Black-bLue.

Hope this helps

PS: Your engine light comes on in the dash right? If not you may not be getting power to your ecu.

She's alive!!! Innocent fool you got me down the right path. Thanks.. I striped apart the orig 88 chasis harness and followed the one connector that the 89 did not have. It was a wire from the coil to a Y between the ignition and a 2" x 4" ribbed metal box mounted to the passenger wheel well. anybody know what that item is?? Also the fuel pump wasnt' running so I had to jump it. I'm going to look for the correct wire path for that next...
