Independence Day weekend trip - Colorado

Time again to plan another camping-off-roading get together.
July 4th is on a Friday this year. A great 3 day weekend to get some camping and 4-wheeling in.
I was thinking of the Buena Vista/South Park area again. By that time, Taylor Pass should be passable as well as Tincup. I'd also like to get up to Mosquito Pass and Webster Pass. I'll know if those are passable by June 22nd. I'd also be open to Chinaman's and any other suggestion.

For those who have July 4th off from work, how about meeting up Thurday night, camping and 4-wheeling through Sunday?

Who's in?

I'll deffinatly be working all weekend. I'm taking the previous weekend off for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

All of the sudden you want to do Chinaman's eh? Your fancy backup lights and chrome exhaust tip WILL be toast afterword.

How far is that from Red Rocks?

I may be game, just need to check the distance, but I can't be there until Friday night.

Any others?

Buena Vista is 1.5-1.75 hrs from Morrison (Red Rocks).

I can't commit quite yet as I'm not sure what coverage we'll need at my work. If I am free, I'll definitely be there. Should be much warmer at night the next time around, not to mention all of the trails will then be open.

Chinaman's is about 4 blocks from where we met up last weekend, if that's what you are asking.

A Friday night meet would be fine again, too, if everyone has a work schedule they need to follow.

Alamosa to Johnson Village is 99 miles and 2 hours 30 min. estimated travel time according to Mapquest.com. In reality its closer to 2 hours drive depending on your endurance behind the wheel. Its pretty much due North from Alamosa up CO17 to US 285.

I just meant any other people. Trail selection is fine whatever we do so long as I can make it to Walmart for a balance before I go home.

Any other people?

I should be a go unless I need to work Sunday so I can go to Arizona.

Count me out on this one. 4th of July weekend is one weekend I try to avoid the mountains - too many people on the roads and on the trails. I'll be up at Lake McCaunaghy (sp?) that weekend.

However, I'm thinking about a day trip on June 21st. I might post a new thread to see if there is any interest in that.

Ha! You think McConaughy is the place to go to avoid the crowds?! Half of the Denverites will be up there as they always are on that weekend. I'll take mountains over that anytime! Just messin' with ya though.

Yeah, but at least there's a lot more "eye candy" in the crowd at lake Mac.

hope Anna doesn't read this.

Actually - up at Macaunaghy - with the water pretty low - ther are lots of exposed rocks and beach to play on. I want to have a 4runner gathering/ campout up there sometime - I'm afraid to try too much out there by myself - that sand can be tricky with no one to pull you out.

BigMac4RJ? Hahahaha!

I don't know. Unless one of the locals has a nice, big boat (doubt it since we all have 4Runners and a 3.4!) that we could all cruise on, that place isn't a top priority for me.

I hear you on the eye candy though! :beach:

So John is afraid to play with himself at the lake and as a result, we need to come and help? This seems a bit troubling.

Where on the 21st? Pretty sure I can swing it.

Not that Darren, Matt and Allan are not super cool guys, because they are, but aren't there any other people who want to wheel and meet me this summer who are from Colorado?

I think you may have to go wheeling with.... dare I say it, JEEPERS. People may look at your fully armored dual locker 33" tired rock sled and be a little apprehensive about trying to follow you.

I went on a run with a bunch of Jeeps and other makes from the Colorado4x4.org gang. I was the only IFS rig there and they gave me the buisness about that quite a bit but it was all in fun. The shut right up when they saw that my truck and my driving skill can combine to do some things without breaking. We spent a lot of time that day waiting on stuck and broken Jeeps and Fords and I got to talk $#!t quite a bit. It was a blast.

I'll be too busy the weekend of the 21st, too. I'll be installing sliders and a CB.

I'd be interested in doing a multi day trip to buena vista over the 4th of july, however, as you can see i don't have the most capable rig yet and am unfamiliar with that area... am i biting off more than i can chew in trying to attempt it with you guys?

Not at all. I'm not a "gonzo" 4-wheeler. I don't like the "tippy" stuff at all. I do like the technical stuff though. Taylor Pass is a must. That trail just flat kicks ass!
Despite what I previously said, I doubt I'd be willing to tackle Chinaman's.

I *might* be changing my plans. Depending on how the flowers are doing in the San Juans, I might be heading down there. And, I might be wheeling with a Jeeper for the first time. Hehe!

It's a 4 day weekend for me and I probably should take advantage of that to head down there. I will have to wait to get a good flower update from "Claw" on CO4x4 or "DSP" on this board who is in Telluride.

All but Imogene and BB are open there now, with Imogene opening up this week in all likelihood. Should be very beautiful with all the snow still left. This time last year, there was pretty much zero.

We'll see . . .

So what's the plan?

I am going to be way north and would like to take advantage of that fact, but it sounds like plans are changing?
