I have an 86 4runner with a 22re non-turbo. The engine has 200,000 miles on it and the timing chain needs to be replaced. I figured that I should just go ahead and replace the engine. I am buying a rebuilt one from Rhino engines and was wanting to know if I can put a 6cylinder in instead of a 4cylinder. Is it possible? How hard would it be? and what are the modifications?

 

search for 3.4L swap. There are several members on here doing the swap. The 3.0l swap is a waste of time and money IMHO. Try www.offroadsolutions.com for most if not all your answers.

 

I agree that the 3.0 swap isn't worth it, bit if I were you I would leave the 22RE in there and just repair it, those things are great motors.

Unless you have money to burn...
3.4L- the ORS kit is pretty expensive, you can do the wiring yourself if you have the FSM wiring diagrams, are mechanically inclined and confident in your abilities. You'll need the motor, ECM and harness(or ORS kit). Mods- you will have to install a 2" body lift if you don't already have one, or a scoop on the hood, the 3.4 is taller and interferes with the hood. I'm not sure but you may need a different bellhousing and a mix of parts for a hybrid clutch.

IMO the 3.4 swap is worth it if you have a 3.0 because that motor has a lot of drawbacks- gutless, unreliable, goes through head gaskets, etc... The 22RE however is a very good motor, the only drawback is HP output, nothing gearing and crawler boxes can't fix.

 

I checked out off road solutions. Nice recomendation. I think the conversion is going to be more than I want to get into. My Toyota is a daily driver that does little hauling. I would like to have a little more power but it looks like more money and time than I can commit right now.

 

ive had a 22re wasint really stock and a drove a 3.0L more than a few times i wouldint trade my 3.4L for anything
