first gen bed on 2nd gen truck?

could I just bolt on a std cab 1st gen bed onto my std cab 85?

I like the beds with the two latches and the lip all the way around better than mine.

My friend has a 1st gen bed on a Tacoma. They are two different colors, but it really doesn't look that bad. I was amazed that there was not that much difference in size.

Yeah it's an 85.

I would asume that the mounts are the same because all the hilux and pickups that I have seen in south and central america no matter what year the cab is always have the 1st gen bed.

Just wondering if anyone knew for sure. I'm just gonna have to find an older truck and measure it up

it'll fit .. 6 of the 8 mounts are the same .. fuel filler pipe mount is different , and the 79-83 bed has a marker in the rear and bolt on flares .

the bed is about 1" thinner , so it will not match up to the cab corners , and the body lines dont match .. but there ... ehhh ... close , depends the look your goin' for ..

They are NOT the same .

79-83 bed curtasy of toyotafiberglass.com

and

84-88 bed

.

you know... I can swear that I've seen 84-88 beds with those top rails and twin latches you're talking about in the scrap yard all the time. Mainly on 2wd trucks.

off the cuff the top latches and the smooth sides had something to do with "assembly" at the port...

I think that the smooth sided ones were placed on "spacers" on the frame and the truck as "assembled" in the USA by running an impact gun ont he bolts - breaking the spacers off - and "assembling" the truck int he USA..

Or so some one said...

The lip/latch tended to me more common on 2WD than 4WD as far as I recall

The lip all the way around on the bed of 2nd gen pickups means it's a Canadian or JDM version (could be others too... not sure). The US version is smooth (no lip).

USA ONLY had the "smooth" side .. everywhere else in the world got the bed with the lip .

it was because of the US import laws at the time . They built a plant in Cali. to build the fleetside beds , and installed them at the port ..
