New Michelin tire? I might try these

Just saw on the Tire Rack site that LTX AT2's are going to debut in late July. I'm posting in this section, because it's the first Michelin A/T tire that I've seen in the stock size. 265/70/16

I mostly travel on the highway, and since MPG is very important to me, I was going to get some A/S tire in the stock size and switch them out to a more aggressive tire for wheeling or snow. I may still do that, but I was just excited that Michelin is going to put out this tire. The only other choice I had were the REVO's, so it's refreshing to get another option. (BTW, I mainly only buy BS or Mich, so that's why my choices are limited).

Another plus is that now I can get these tires at Costco. I'll probably end up ordering these will give a review. People have reported getting 90k out of the LTX AT's, so hope these will last just as long.

They look good but probably will be more expensive at Costco.

Oh they last and last and last for some reason, I think they have a hard tire compound.

superhard...my michelin a/t tires are 265/70-16's

with 50psi in the rain i can spin in 2nd gear.

i was told these tires are 20k miles old & the treads still great.

the spare still had the nipples all over it, until about 3 days ago when a nail went through the sidewall...$300-something for a replacement...time for some 22's

90k? I guess I don't mind having a tire that only gets 50k since I'm not sure I'd want to drive on the same tires for 9 years which is how long it would take me to hit 90k. I think 3-4 years is long enough on a set since time itself and the elements will weaken a tire before the miles wear them out.

I got 80k on a set of Michelins LTX ATs I had on a Chevy Z71 I used to own...so 90K is very possible. The only reason I didn't go farther on them, is b/c I sold the truck. One of the best set of tires I've ever owned.

At that time, I drove 30K miles a year, so I needed a tire that lasted.

They are pricey though. I want to say they were around $180 a tire.

im sure it will last 90k but calling that an all terrain is a stretch.

Mich Cross terraines

Hi,
I own a 99' 4 runner SR5, 4wd, 3.4 L with 140, ooo miles on it.
I bought the Michelin Cross Terraines tires at costco. I use this truck as a high miliage work truck that sees a lot of HWY use (I drive 30 to 35K miles a year). I love these tires as the roll with very little resistance and really high quality tread compound improves the ride they are larger two 65's-70 -16's

They are pricy $$$$, as I spent $760.00 MINUS $60.00 Off rebate in the form of a Costco gift card so basically I spent $700.00 for 4 tires, free mounting, Free nitrogen air fill, lifetime balancing and rotation, roadside hazard included. 65000 tred warrenty included. I get them rotated, balanced, air pressure check and fill with Nitrogen every 5K at costco for free.

I wanted better fuel economy so I did the following
- 4 new Cross terraine tires I stayed with the larger optional tires for the 16" rim. I can feel the engine working much less to turn these tires, almost no road noise, much smoother

- replaced the before catilitic Oygen sensor at 140K, a surprizing "bi 'ach" of a job (rusted bolts, terriable)
- removed roof rack, a roof rack is like a giant sail, great for boating, bad for MPG .
-removed class 3 trailor hitch to paint, left it off feels like its a heavy sucker(60 + lbs)
-left off spare tire to test MPG, left it off still.... hope I dont get a flat
-I drive at 60 to 70 MPH, now instead of 85 MPH
I been running Mobil 1 syntheic 5w 30, flows better ...i'm a "Synner"
thinking of 0W 30....

I improved 5 MPG to over 19 Miles per gallon. Not great, but when you drive 100 miles per day....do the math... $$$

I havent bought a new spare tire yet...... as these tires cost $177.00 each
i will soon...
Knock on wood

Decent looking tire, but more of a highway tread than a true all terrain. Just looked at 285's, and they're running $199...ouch! I'll take Terra Grapplers for $120 each over these.

Not trying to be a spoil sport, but having taller tires (larger tires) will make the engine work harder while accelerating since you are effectively creating a taller gear ratio. Overall though, once the truck is up to speed, if your engine is in good healty condition, it should be able to do less work (lower RPMs) to get the same MPH.

Like others have said, the Michelin LTX A/T's last and last. I couldn't believe that people have been getting 80K+ miles out of these. Crazy. They do have a harder compound, though, which means less traction. Like I said, these will be my mainly on-road/summer tires, so I'm not worried about off-road or snow traction. I will have more meaty and capable tires for that. Which means, if I am only going to be on these tires for pretty much half of the year, they should last me quite a long time. A looooong time.

Tire size is a factory Specification

Hi,
your right, larger tires are not as good as the smaller ones for MPG because of the "unsprung" heaver spinning weight. Costco will not allow you to change the tire size and I wanted to buy from costco for the free air fill with nitrogen, free lifetime rotations and balancing and the road hazard is included for the life of the tire.
And no i don't work for costco....

Due to the fact that i had the same size previously ( as with the old tires) costco and most tire shops will not allow customers to switch to a different/smaller size because of the liability, also the speedometer will be off. The larger tire size was done at the factory (factory installed option, Not dealer) so my truck is specd out from the toyota factory for these tires.

LTX Great tire, yet an older design

Make no Mistake, the Mich is LTX is a BOMB proof tire, yet the design is also over a decade old... As far as the snow or offroad you would be REAL suprised how great the Michelin LTX does in the snow and off road...its great tire, but like i said a much older tire design.....
Hey if it ain't broke...
Now if you are looking for a better radial tire for MPG and hwy use, and moderate snow and offroad go with the Mich cross terrain, the design is newer the ride is softer, quiter and there's less rolling resistance than the MICH LTX.
good luck

michelins don't have much of an off-road reputation but are great on the road. definitely at the higher end of the price spectrum but if they last that much longer then it's money well spent, right? not a very agressive tread pattern for an A/T which might be an issue for some peeps.
