Welding with contact lenses

Wasnt sure where to put this so move it if you like.

I had heard a long time ago that you were not supposed to weld with contact lenses because they could become fused to your eyes. Ive always welded without contacts but was wondering if this was true. I did a google search and couldnt find any real evedince that it was true or false. It kinda sounds like its just an urban legend.

So does anyone on here wear contacts and weld? If so do you take them out when you weld?

Thanks

I hardly weld at all and I don't wear contacts but I don't see how that would really happen unless there was a horrible accident

just keep the glasses or the mask on and your good...i also dont see how this could be true, for if the contact would fuse to your eye, wouldnt your eye just get burned without them?

The reason you arent supposed to weld with contact lenses is because the fumes can get stuck between the lens and the eyeball as well as sparks, or little metal shavings causing severe eye damage. Theres a small chance of it happening yet a precaution to take none the less.

Many people love the idea of getting rid of their glasses and contacts, but they cringe at the thought of having a procedure performed on their eyes. We’re hoping that we can help people overcome their fears by providing accurate and helpful information about LASIK and other refractive procedures. With time tested technology and fine-tuned surgical skill, this procedure is one of the safest, most effective eye treatments available. And we believe the benefits far outweigh the risks.

If you weld it is not a matter of IF but WHEN you get hot slag in your eyes, even wearing safety glasses under your shield. I have been to my eye doc more times than I can count and have had a few stubborn pieces cut out and the rust scraped out.

I have had LASIK but used to wear contacts and burnt a hole in a contact from hot slag but other than that no worries.

Never rub your eyes after welding but flush them with eye solution or water and then visually check in a well lit area with a mirror. A clean Q tip or magnet usually does the trick if the flush does not work.

Be safe as you only get one set of eyes.

I wear contacts and have had zero problems as a direct result. If you wear the correct protective equipment you should never know a difference. The fumes are the only problem that I foresee; however, that should be remedied by washing your contacts every night.

By the way, when did Elvota become a staff member?
