5.9 CTD into 2nd gen......

So I've been thinking out loud lately, but considering the dimensions of the motor, I'm curious if it'd be possible to fit a 5.9L cummins turbo diesel motor in the 2nd gen. Incredible power and good economy in an ultra reliable package.

Would make for one surprising rig!

Weights a ton

But hey - go for it

could the rest of the drive train handle all the torque? I know the toyota rear is strong but that is a lot more power compared to the 3.0

Ive seen people use Toyota drivetrains behind small blocks but even thats too much power. I think if you didnt upgrade to a one ton drivetrain with a CTD it wouldnt last. But I'd love to see it done. Thats a long motor. It would be a TIGHT fit no doubt.

yeah I know it's long. I figure some hacking of the firewall and moving forward of the rad would be necessary.

Too bad it's not easier to get our hands on the 2.5L turbo diesel found in runners overseas. I'd get that sucker in a heartbeat! And i'd be willing to bet it'd bolt right up to my A340.

Ahh yes, I found it. The inline 4 turbo diesel used in box trucks like fedex and bread delivery type dillys.

Interesting. 100ish hp and 300ft-lbs. More than enough torque to simply waste my 3.slow and good mileage to boot.

That's a good swap I'll be looking into once the SAS is complete.

You might look here. Interesting info.
You could get a TD and stay all Yota.

One guy over on S10Forum stuck a 6.5 CTD in his 2nd gen S10.. It was lifted and he dropped the motor mounts so he wouldn't have to modify the hood.. then he changed his mind and started putting a duracrap in there.

So I would assume yeah it can be done but it's a lot of work..

and hell, anything can be done with time, money and a welder.

Just thinking out loud here, but do you have any idea how freaking huge the 5.9 Cummins is?

When people put them in 80's, that came with large straight 6 engines, they have big time space issues. A 2nd Gen is considerably smaller.

As to the drivetrain holding up, get real. A stock 5.9 with 12 valves has more than twice the HP and 3 times the torque as a 22re.

Weight, did we mention weight?

If it's lifted enough he could drop the motor mounts a couple inches..

with a sas he could have enough space to do this but i believe even with a 3 inch bl their would be trouble. The weight is still a concern

Well, box in the frame with some 2x3 tubing in the half c. That'd help a ton.

I believe that these trucks frams are already boxed. So you would just have to beef of the suspension some. This would be pretty sweet.

It would be cool, but I have to second the idea that a 4BT would be a better idea.

the 5.9L is just too big, both power wise, and physical size. The motor weighs damn near 800lbs, a 22RE weighs what 250 tops. Think about not only how that will effect the suspension, but also the weight distribution in the truck. All of a sudden you're going from a 3500lb truck with a 65/35 weight split to a 4000+lb truck with a 75/25 split. It's tall, you'd need a serious body lift and would still have to drop the motor mounts. It's long, you'd need to clearance the firewall, and more than likely run the rad in the rear.

I've dreamed about this swap myself, but sadly I think it's just that: a dream

You would be better off getting a dodge truck and modding your body to fit on the dodge chassis.

That would look crazy goofy.

If I were you, to be honest.. I would find a smaller CAT diesel.
