So my wife called me saying the 4Runner wouldn't shift. She drove it to get dinner but when she got in, turned it on, and put it in reverse, nothing happened. She could pull it through all the gears and nothing. When she tried to get it back in Park it started to grind.
I show up, hopped in and verify her story. With the shifter in Neutral I slowly pulled the 4x shifter into 4H. At that point the main shifter worked and we got it home in 4WD. I searched nine pages but didn't see anything related.
It's a '97 Limited 4WD with 61,000 miles. The 4Runner came from my mom and was babied. Garaged, low miles, and was never used for towing. I checked the fluid, it was full and clean.

Where should it be in 2WD? 4HI? My '86 has 2WD Hi.

 

Crap, I didn't even realize it says Hi not 4HI. Huh, my wife drives this. Damn... mods delete this embarrasing post.

Haha...hey man everyone has one of those days! I'd be interested to know how the 4wd transfer case got that way....!
