Was looking at cable modems. What is the best to use with Comcast now (Seattle area)

Also, a renter at my inlaws house stole the cable modem from there when he left. Comcast wants $150 to replace it.......I see them at Fry's for $75

Linksys in my opinion make the best hardware. Maybe a little more expensive, but mine's been going strong for 4 years, through several different companies.

Actually, at this point, I only use Linksys for all of my networking gear. In my opinion they are by far the best.

I do use a Linksys router though that was supplied by Vonage, and it works great.
Linksys use to have a bad reputation, but Cisco took over awhile back and they have improved much.

Also call up Comcast for our area and see what they have to say.
They also recommenced the 5100 to me when I switched to it from my old one.

I use to get around 10,000K for download, and 256K for upload.

Exactly, Linksys is Cisco, which is one of the companies that runs the internet. Huge, very good networking company.

The WRTP54G from Vonage is a piece, but I'm glad it works great for you Corey. I never could get mine working right, and Linksys was retarded when they put their name on a product they don't support. Like I said...retarded. Vonage worked fine, but that router I absolutely despised. I actually ended up running another router upstream from that for my computers, and only used the WRTP54G for my Vonage. However, the non-Vonage version of that router, the WRT54G is an amazing router, with a huge amount of support and options available.

IMO, calling Comcast is asking to be ripped off. I've had Comcast, and Cox, and Fry's is WAY cheaper. Comcast will sell you what they have, not necessarily what's better. Just my opinion, but I only buy and use Linksys products now.

And I REFUSE, even if it's the last product on Earth, to by D-Link. EVERY time I've tried to set one up, or maintain them, they just don't work. I would say to stay away from D-Link.

Netgear is good, but I just don't like their performance as much as Linksys.

Again, just my opinion, from the dozens that I've setup and maintained.

 

For speed testing, I also really like www.speakeasy.net, great little speed test, and there's a server in Washington too.

It has been good to me, and my speeds are very fast here.
Router has never let us down here. in the three years or so I have been on Vonage when I got it.

 

Oh, yours isn't the wireless router is it? Mine was, and it was junk. Yes, yours is the good one. No wonder you never had problems with it!

It's a Linksys, but they do not support it at all. Only Vonage does, and that my friend is just a joke...

 

I do not beleive in wireless

I use to be a pretty hardcore gamer off and on, have not had time to commit for over a year to gaming.

We run three gaming machines here at my place, and I use to run a sever out of the Seattle Hilton Hotel (main hub for many servers in WA. state) with a friend who hosted both Unreal Tournament 2004 and Counter Strike:Source, so wireless was not for me.

Everything is cat5 here at my home, setup for 3 full time connections to game with me hosting, or for us to connect to other servers like when I use to co-run the UT side of my friends server.

He only has CS:S on it now, waiting for UT2007 to launch, then we will load it to the server.

PS, maybe one day I will try wireless, but for now it is not for me.

 

I too hate wireless, it's a bloody nightmare. Everyone thinks it's a godsend, but it's irritating as holy mess.

I have Cat5 in my room, and I try to have Cat5 everywhere, but not everyone understands computers, or the benefits of a hard wire.

And I've never been a gamer. I can't justify the cost, especially now with the CrossFire, or SLI. I play strategy games, like Civilization. My brother just got GuildWars, so after I'm done with school, I'll get Windows installed and play that.

But me, I'm a tinkerer. Right now I run Mac/Linux on my Acer, and soon enough I'll triple boot Windows/Mac/Linux (maybe FreeBSD or Solaris too, just to play).

Having Cat5, just makes things SO much easier...

Now if I can only get my dad to get rid of Qwest, and go with Cox. 1.5Mbps down is killing me, when I'm used to 9.

 

Guild Wars is good, and free I think.

My youngest son was over most of last Saturday, and was playing it for a few hours, as he put it on last year.

He is into World Of WarCraft, wish I had time to play, as him and my oldest son that is in the Army play quite often together and with other Army guy's on my son's base.

In fact Dave how started the thread here use to play both of my sons the original Delta Force game back in the late 90s.
My brothers son was one of the lead artists for that game.

Comcast gave me a free Motorola 5100 when I moved to a new town a little over two years ago even though I was an existing account. They'll do some tricks for you if you mention Verizon or other competition. The modem has been flawless.

It was Jim (mytruck) who lives up the road from me that tipped me off this afternoon that the speed had doubled in our area.

 

I got the linksys at fry's. Tried calling comcast to activate. press this.....press that.....talk to a rep.....oh, I have to transfer you......."I'm sorry, you have to call during regular business hours"

 

That blows. When I was getting my service "fixed" in Colorado Springs, which had just switched to Comcast, I was on hold for 45 minutes, so they could tell me I had to call back during normal business hours.

I was just a little irritated....

 

I'd go with Linksys. No problems with mine. I reset it every week.

 

Shoot, my home connection is faster than Boeing's T1 line, at least on the download it is.
But the upload at work smokes.
