preparing block for head gasket

small question, will cleaning the grease/oil and scraping what little gasket is left on the block be good enough for preparing it for the head gasket? I dont have any access to any kind of grinder tools.

I used scotch brite and some paint thinner to clean the surface real well...I definitely would rather spend an hour cleaning the head surface than 4 hours redoing the whole deal...

make sure you clean out the head bolt holes, if you dont you can get the wrong torque reading.

REALLY GOOD POINT, that I somehow forgot...there is some stuff on the market which is designed soecifically to be applied to headbolts...it is red and coppery looking. Somewhat like anti seize compund I think. It helps get accurate torque readings and better, more even pressure.
