steering slop

i'm replacing the 3vze in a '92 4x4 xcab sr5. while the engine is still out, i'd like to do something (if it's worthwhile) about tightining up the steering. it's kinda loose.

any information would be greatly appreciated.

thanx,
ztrahp

You need to figure out where the slop is first. It could be worn ball joints or other direct link components.

The steering box does wear over time and has an adjustment nut on it. Confirm that the slop is in the steering box before attempting to adjust it. It's a simple lock nut and adjuster screw, but as it wears the center position will be more loose than when deflecting it.

Personally, I doubt it's the steering box. Not saying it isn't, but if your rig has not seen a lot of off-road abuse those things rarely go out. The ball joints are pretty stout, too.

I'd suspect something like your idler arm or tie rods ends first. Even then, tie rods foremost.

The pitman arm on mine was the culprit.
