Question How long do Detroit's Last? Found a deal...

I found a buddy of mine who has a Detroit for a Toyota 8" and it has some miles on it (not sure how many), but he said it was running strong when removed. It is a full Detroit, not a soft locker. There are no clutches to wear out. He said it should be good to go and would take a couple hundred for it.

The R&P gave on his 3rd, so he just replaced the R&P and got a new Detroit.

What should I look for to indicate problems?

Thanks!

John

sounds fishy John. Most would just replace the R&P, sounds like something was wrong and he is trying to get some coin for it. BUT, if you trust the guy, I say go for it.

I guess that is my question. Do these things crap out just like everything else? What is there to gauge whether or not the thing is good. I don't know enough about Detroits to say for sure. It was in two vehicles total. I wonder if the R&P crapping out was caused by failure of Detroit. I don't know him except as an aquaintance - so is no trust history there.

I dunno, I was going to go see it tomorrow. That is why I wondered if there is anything that can be watched for.

I would imagine just chipped teeth. I can't see how a Detroit would lead to R&P failure...

I just didn't know if one may have an adverse effect on the other. I wondered if a chip may have gotten into the Detroit somewhere. Are Detroits noisy when locking and unlocking?

Never had a Detroit before. Just Lock Rites.

I have a Detroit right now and i love it. Its manners are great. I would get the locker since you arent paying full price for it.

Well, $200 sounds like it's a good deal. That is the point that offsets my concerns. I wonder if it has many more miles ahead on it's life. I would love to try it out (considering the Lunch Box lockers are at minimum $250.)

If I get this, and only have one locker, which axle should the detroit be put into? Front or Back?

just my personal opinion but i'd put it in the front. = less wear and tear, and you only use it when you really need it, i.e. locking the hubs and engaging 4wd. other than that, you are putting un-needed mileage/wear on it.

i like being able to wheel in 4 hi/lo with hubs unlocked until i start getting bogged, then i engage the front. if a locker is in the front when its called into duty... its go time!

Those are some good points Simply. I will consider that!!

Welp, I bought it. $200 - and the reason the guy didn't reuse it is that he went from a 4CYL 3rd to a V6 3rd. The locker is specific for a 4CYL. It looks like it's in good shape, it is one of the older Detroit Hard Locker's. I am happy - got 1 locker down, now one and some gears to go!!

I'll post some pictures up soon in he Build Up Thread!
