new 2 me 86 runner. school me

ok i bought a basket case. 1986 4runner 22re 5 speed 4x4. what do i need to look for, replace, modify or remove. has 186k on the dial . my wife signed off on cause she liked the color. already replaced 80% of braking system and need to replace rear springs( really saging, like beyond flat and going in the other direction) fix rear fenders and balljoints. this thing sat for 6 years due to a dead battery. guy was clueless thought it needed a starter and injetors. i got it for almost nothing so i don't mind digging in to this thing. so i just need to know some problem areas on the runners. thanx

Nothing really these things are stout, may wanna adjust the valves, and do the timing chain. id flush all fluids too. May have some nasty build up in there.

depending on where you are, rust can be a big issue. check out the maintenance section, you should find everything you need in there. a chiltons or haynes manual will come in very handy as well.

congrats on the 86, you will enjoy building it to your specs and so will your wallet!

Ha! Just like mine. I agree with everyone else. A good flushing then, a thorough tune up, and then just drive it for a while and see what comes up. For reference my 86 has 237k on it. Broke the timing chain at 125k, so a new chain and valve job then. Head gasket went a couple thou ago. Re did that at home on the cheap. Thats been about it other than the stuff you expect to poop out every so many miles. (Battery, brakes, alt, starter, tires) You might see some gasket failures with it sitting so long, but then maybe not. Again, get 'er running and then see what you need. Good luck!
