Steel Straight Edge

Planning on buying a good machinist's straight edge and trying to decide how long it needs to be. A 24" is WAY cheaper than a 36". I wanted a 3' straight edge originally, but a 2' is half as much (both Starrett). I'm doing misc engine stuff mostly, checking my manifolds and head for flatness, that sort of thing. It's a 22R-E, so we're talking about a pretty small engine.
