truck won't start

well, for the first time, my truck won't start. i was leaving work, (it started perfectly on the drive in) and the starter was going like crazy, but the engine wasn't even trying to turn over. my first thought, since i could smell the gas (meaning i was assuming it was getting fuel) is that since it wasn't even trying to turn over, the rotor was gunked up. so i took off the distributor cap and sanded down the rotor (it was carboned up pretty good) and then got the plug wire contacts as best i could. when i put it back together it started up, ran rough for a few seconds (i probably flooded it trying to start it initially) and then ran like normal. i drove home, turned it off, and then restarted it like 2 or 3 more times, and no problems. then it sat from thursday till sunday when i tried starting it again. yesterday, it had a hard time starting but was able to. this morning, no start at all.

when i get home, i will be looking at doing all of the obvious. changing plugs, wires, cap/rotor, ignition pack, air filter and fuel filter. if i can get it started i will also check the timing to see if somehow it got so knocked out of whack that it might have something to do with it. anything else that anyone can think of that might be the culprit?

by the way, as long as i've had the truck (4 years), it has NEVER taken more than 2 seconds to start. i can't really remember it ever taken more than 1 second, but DEFINITELY never more than 2 seconds.

Sounds like a good tune up , will do it well. Might as well do a compression test while your at it.

Your plan sounds solid. I recently changed my cap, rotor, plugs and wires as well.
