2 probs: throttle stuck wide open. whats that button above the gas pedal for?

I was driving just casually yesterday when all of a sudden i swiched fron 2nd to third and i noticed that the RPM's were rising fast when i put the clutch in to shift(during the neutral part of the shift). i didnt think much of it cause i was on the phone. Then when i went from 3rd to 4th, in between the shift the rpms did the same thing like the gas pedal was floored all the way down but it wasnt. In other words the truck was reving by itself. felt like the engine would of blown if i hadnt shut it down. i shut off the truck and pulled over, checked under the hood and all seemed good. i played with the throttle assembly a little bit, then checked under the dash. the gas pedal was fine or at least appeared that way. I noticed there was a button switch thing above the gas pedal. I pressed it just to see what would happen. turned on the truck and the reving went away. whats that button for?
what the...? sorry the story was so long, but any suggestions would help. thanks.
any ideas.

the button is looks like a relay but with a push button on the right hand side of it. follow the gas pedal up and its right there. let me try and get some pics of it.

Are you talking about the button that your e-brake pushes when it is all the way in? The one that turns the 'brake' light off.

As for your engine revving problem. Take a look at the end of your throttle cable. There is a little rubber boot near the end of it. That thing can slide off and get wedged between the actual cable and part of the throttle body. Where it will hold the throttle body open.

Spray your throttle assembly with some WD-40. Mine used to do the same thing but it was a combo of that rubber boot and some faulty idle adjustments.
