i was thinking about getting a trd supercharger and i have some questions, first do you have to upgrade the pistons to machined ones. i assume the stock ones are cast. second can you run mid-grade or do you have to run premium. third will it void your warrenty.fourth what kind of mileage do you get is it less or more

i really need to know b/c Amoco premium has been as high as 1.93 per gallon:cry:

 

1. No, you dont have to upgrade the stock pistons

2. Run premium, yes

3. It will void your warranty only if you install it (the truck warranty) if Toyota installs it, the factory warranty remains.

4. Some get better MPG, and some get worse. Depends on how heavy your right foot is.

Feel free to chime in SC guys, I may have missed something.

Hey 97, dont you still have to pay your parents back? What are you doing getting a SC?

 

Stock pistons, premium gas. Won't void warranty if the dealer puts it on. I average about 18 miles/gallon.

Not true, says right in the manual for the SC that as long as you use the charger on the correct application, all warranties are still in place. Does not matter who does the install!!!!


I looked into this before I did mine, for the exact same reason. Send your warranty card in and your fine.

I am averaging 18 mpg with mine. I try to keep from leadfooting it.

The warranty is 1 year on the supercharger if you do the install yourself. If the dealership does the install it falls under the powertrain warranty, 6yr/60,000 miles.

OK, if we're going to be specific, I'll lay exactly how the warranty works.

If you do it yourself, the SC is warrantied for 1 year, and the factory powertrain for the vehicle is retained.


IF you have the steeler install it, then you get a 3 yr. on the charger, and your factory powertrain still applies.

If you/or the steeler install a TRD SC on a '95 T100 for example, all warranties are null and void.

If you don't care, then it doesn't matter


I figured if the SC was going to fail, it would happen soon if ever, so the 1 year would most definately cover me. From what I have read, the only thing to worry about is the noise assembly, which can go out, but can be replaced individually.

I hope to finally get a SC this summer after making some real phat cash at my second job. The only problem is that everywhere I considered buying it from jacked up their prices from around $2k to $2500 or more. Anybody have any ideas on where one can still purchase it for a reasonable price?

To answer your questions, the s/c bolts right on and the warranty question has been answered. 93 Octane is required, it seems the going concensus is you will pay about an extra $3.00 a week for gas, you need to pay to play!

Some will debate, but if you have an A/T then the ATF cooler is cheap insurance and you may as well shift to synthetic ATF. I feel pretty strongly that the A/T valve body is a required upgrade after the S/C. The slow shift of the A/T is REALLY noticable with the S/C.

You should also consider the cooler thermostat and plugs.

Then there is the debate about the fuel modifications and pinging. The new trucks seem to manage it better.

Bolting on the S/C is just the beginning of the journey! But the added torque and HP is FUN!

Two other items to consider if you scrape up enough spare change to buy and install a supercharger ...

1) Transmission cooler

2) Transmission valve body mod

#1 is pretty essential from what's been posted and #2 will become necessary if your rig has a definite shift lag and you don't want to destroy the transmission, or so I was advised.

Mine had a very pronounced lag shifting from 1st to 2nd, but after the mod it's gone. Further, the shifts now are so firm that it chirps some rubber when shifting into 2nd. My wife has started calling my truck "Lurch" because of the firm shifts.

Correct me If I am wrong, but only the 3.4L can be SUPERCHARGED, right??

Which means, the 3.0L cannot........???
