Ive been searching for info on this, but to no avail. Im looking at purchasing a 93 toyota 4x4 22re 5spd. there are only 86k original miles, and the frame and everything is flawless. the only thing is there is quite a bit of buildup at the front of the motor at the valve cover. is this a sign of a bigger scarier problem? i really want to buy this thing, but it worries me. let me know what you think. thanks guys.

 

It's possible the valve cover is seeping oil, which is relatively common, and it's gotten a buildup of mud and dirt stuck in the oil. Clean it off and replace the valve cover gasket and you're good.

 

yeah, sitting around a lot will cause the cover gasket to leak like that.
