Talking wa4x4's 1998 4Runner Build-Up Thread

I will start off by saying I am not sure this is where this thread belongs, but I figured I would share my mild build with you guys, and this could be a place to follow the progress of my 1998 4runner Limited.

The history of the 4runner is quite simple really. My mom bought it off the showroom floor one night in 1998 and the next morning it was in the mud because she "wanted to test it out". That weekend she had it up in the mountains on logging roads hiking and the rest is history.

So far what I have added are a set of 265/75R/16 BFG Mud Terrains, a Flowmaster 50 series muffler, removed the running boards for better ground clearance (found out the hard way running boards do not do a rock slider's job). I have also cut the front bumper as of yesterday 3/7/07.

My goal for this 4runner is to make a reliable daily driver that can go out and wheel with capable rigs on the weekends for now. I have a high flow cat in the backseat ready to be installed, I just don't have the time right now to do it. I might just take it to a muffler shop this week and have them weld it in.

So anyways, here are the most recent pictures!

You know something bad is about to happen...

Yep, I cut it...

Finished cut (needs to be cleaned up some)

Flex (or lack there of)

More flex.

Yep.

Next project...sliders!

Detail time!!
Lovin' the Limited.

Need new corner lenses..

So fresh n so clean

9 years of use never looked so good

Now, you guys have to understand. Before I cleaned up the interior I think I could have been up for the "Dirtiest interior" award... So I think this is pretty good, sure as hell smells better!

I even washed up under the hood!

I want this wheel/tire setup on the 4runner, but alas, this is just the FJ's spare...

I have access to FREE FJ Cruiser wheels with stock tires. I couldn't use my mud terrains, but I could probably buy some new mud terrains and use these 17's, or I could buy new mud terrains in 16", buy black powdercoated rock crawler wheels and sell the FJ wheels/tires... What do you think???
Stock

FJ Cruiser (looks bigger because of the angle)

I think they might be too "bling" for the 4runner..

Oh, and the Hurst T-handle shifter never leaves the center console area. I have it there in rememberance of my 2nd gen, beautiful sierra beige 4runner in PERFECT condition with leather and a 5 speed. It had a semi-bum 3 liter that could have been rebuilt, but I probably would have 22re swapped it if I had kept it...

I should have kept it.

Looks nice man. I like the FJ rims.

What is with the hurst shifter knob? Looks tacky, and you still have to push the button on the stock shifter.

OOO so the hurst knob isn't attached to your shifter. Nvm then.

It was going to be a lot more effort to unbolt it, plus the mounts were already torn. I had ripped the passenger side half way off on some rocks, so the mounts were messed up.

You're right, it is fun to use a sawzall too.

'98 got the 4-spoke just like the '99's and up. '96 and '97 just the 2-spoke.

Use the FJ wheels and put on the 17" Tundra brakes. Sell the stock 4Runner wheels with the MTR's here or Tacoma Territory, they should go for a pretty penny if they are in good condition and the tires arent completely worn out.

where is Woodinville at? I have friends in Vancouver and Toutle.

Just curious, I'm assuming that's a factory radio in your 4Runner? I don't think I've ever seen that model HU before...or either I just don't pay attention sometimes.

What years was that model offered?

Oh and just a thought, but you can create a profile here on YT to show off your 4Runner in the "Check Out My Truck" section as well:

I understand the cleaning isn't a build up.
I just figured to include "stock" pictures. Plus, like I stated before this is a very mild build...

It's the stock HU, stock wheel.

Changed the plugs and I guess "Spark Plug Chords" that I went down to Toyota and got for $109.15 and the Toyota is MUCH happier today, it only took about an hour yesterday too. Not too bad.

Not to Toyota they're not...

That's why they are in quotation marks. I asked for spark plug wires and they were like...ooookay and handed me some "spark plug chords"
