Is this True (Oil Question)

Is it true that all 3.0 engines use oil. I used 1 qt in 3000 miles after having the compleat top end re done. I have no smoke, or any signs of oil on the ground under the rig.

Well I'll be....... Choices,choices,choices......Decision, refrain could back-fire, brutally. Oh burn oil, probability high, I'd venture to geuss, from pers. exp., I blame it on that sneaky oil(100% synthetic) I use. I also have rebuilt 3vze.

I can tell you that I was using 1.5 qts per 3k miles until I auto-RX'd the engine. Now the rear main oil seal leak has stopped and I'm down to a little less than a quart per 3k miles. I think the rest is maybe piston ring leak-by by with a few leaks from my front left cam seal which will get replaced if the timing belt ever goes...

1 quart is well within specs for oil consumption.should it or should it not whos to say.toyota says 1 qrt in 1200 miles is acceptable.mitsubishi says 1qrt in 1000 miles is acceptable.neither would be acceptable to me,but 1qrt in 3000 does'nt concern me a bit.heck, its time to change it then anyway

You have to remember that even though the top end is new the rings and cylinder walls are old. Many times a new top end will increase oil consumption (puts more stress on the rings since everything is now sealed up top). Still, 1 quart every 2-3K seems reasonable to me and is probably not enough for you to notice any smoke.

I agree with the above. Mine doesn't seem to noticeably consume oil. At least it didn't before. It just leaks now.

My wifes Camry uses about a quart every 5000 miles. I discovered that once when I didn't change the oil on time.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll chime in with my observations.

First 1qt/ 3000 miles is certainly acceptable for an old engine. even if the top end was redone.

second, this rate of consumption usually won't create visible smoke.

Yea right! My 3.0 used to use 1 qt per 1000 before I changed my headgaskets, I'm not sure how much it will use now but I'm hoping less. I'll be happy if it's only 2 qts. per 3000 miles
