i didnt put on any top/clear coat or anything

the paint for the body is tremclad rust paint just to hopefully slow down the rusting of the old girl, and for the top i used a paint for withstanding high temperature and bonds to plastic

not to concerned about scratches

That looks great!

I attempted the same project last weekend. My top was a bunch 'pinker' than yours. I chose to use black Rustoleum 'Rust-Stop' gloss, because, well, that's all I could find in a pint sized can at Ace Hardware, and I've had pretty good luck in the past. I cleaned/prepped the top, wiped it down real good with thinner, dried it, and taped everything off. Applied with a roller because I wanted a slight textured look.

It turned out HORRIBLE. I don't know what went wrong. I laid 3 coats because the 'glass was so worn down and soaked up the paint. I think the roller was cheap, because a bunch of 'fuzz' came off in the paint. When it dried, it had 'wrinkly' patches all over it.

I don't know if the paint was bad or what. Maybe it was too cold (in the 20's at night, 40's during the day). Maybe the paint wasn't designed for fiberglass? I have no idea, but am contemplating scraping it all off. Did I mention it's still soft to the touch? It's been over 7 days...

By the way, I'm not a total painting idiot. I've painted 'glass buggies before, etc. I have HVLP sprayer but didn't feel like the hassle. Never has this happened to me, though.

Hey I noticed that you don't have the two corner pieces for the front bumper. I have them if you want to pay the shipping.

Sounds like it was way to cold, I dont paint anything that cant be brought inside in a warm house if its under 50F outside. Rollar also sounds really cheap too..

Thanks!
i chose to use the matte look cause i could just imagine all the imperfections showing up with the gloss...the top is already textured when you did the prep did you sand it right down?

tremclad has a textured spray paint maybe for attempt #2?

Well, I've used this same paint before on chassis parts, floor pans, with very good results, using a roller. The 'imperfections' aren't because of the gloss, believe me. I'm almost sure it was bad paint, or too cold. It's still not dry after 7 days? Maybe the thinner I used caused a reaction? You can scrape it off with your fingernail.

I would never attempt to rattle-can something with this much surface area, 'cause of the stripes and overspray it would leave. If (when) I do this again, I'll just squirt it with my HVLP. Or maybe I'll wait 'till it's warmer.

I hadn't planned on running mine with a top anyways, since it's garaged and a weekend driver. I just got bored and it's been a while since I effed something up.
