Converting 88 toyota pickup w/ no powersteering to powersteering

I'm going to look at a 88 Toyota "bare bones to say the least" pickup with no power steering. Just wondering if it's a direct bolt on if I get a pump/pulley etc. from a donor truck or if it's going to be too much of a PITA to convert. Any info would really be appreciated.

pump, idle-up valve, pulley, idler pulley, brackets, hoses, resevoir, powersteering gear, pitman arm, may need to change the idler arm.

Steering arms may be different but it is likely that you could go without them.

Alignment settings are different.

I assume you have a 2wd truck? I have never seen a Toyota 4wd with manual. It is a direct bolt in. The only think you have to drill is the holes in the fenderwell for the p/s resevoir.

My 88 is a factory manual steering 4x4. It is as bare bones as can be!!

No, you wont get used to manual steering. Everyday you'll think, wow how nice power steering would be right now as I try to turn around in this tight parking lot.

Now... I think, wow how much I love this power steering. I can turn the truck around, moving or not with my index finger!

=)

$200 well spent

personally, i loved the non p/s in my 2wd. you could feel everything on the road. of course, the parallel parking was a pita, and low rpm turning could be tough, i enjoyed it. haven't done much wheeling (well-none), but i imagine being in a tight spot w/o the steering assist could be hellish.

hey there, i'm going to be taking the same steps with my toy. its an 88, poormans version so for 9 years (its my first and only vehicle) i've been building my biceps! neep a change for sure... also i want to change out the front dif. i went to change the oil and teeth fell out!! i want to put a straight axel under it eventually. would it be more cost effective to just do the swap then change out the gears? thanks! ~maggi~

Straight axle will cost you MORE than a pretty penny, prolly more than the truck is worth. Pretty time consuming as well. Re-gearing would be alot cheaper, easier to do, and less truck down time.

I guess that for a 4wd, power steering may be nice to have, but I don't see any need for it with a 2wd truck that stays on the road. My 94 2wd truck doesn't have PS and I never miss it. Never, not at all. Nothing against you folks that want to turn the wheels with one finger, it's just not anything I ever felt the desire to do.

If I understand, your front differential is toast. My understanding is that the front differential is the 7.5" differential that Toyota uses in the 2wd, so they're slightly more common than dirt. There was a thread recently in which Matt16 was saying that he had a 4.10 diff from an IFS that he couldn't find anybody to take. If it matches what you have, you can probably negotiate it for not much and that would get you 4wd until you got to the point that you were redy to make other changes, if desired.

88 Toyota pickup converting to powersteering

I acquired all the power steering parts from a 94 Toyota pick up 22re engine which were Power steering gear box, pump and the power steering hose. Would they fit my 1988 Toyota pickup 22r engine carb?
