22r 2wd twice as fast as 22r 4wd?

My buddy has a
86' 22r 2wd with 30in mud terrains and 3.73 gears w/ 4 speed tranny,

and a
86' 22r 4wd with 31in all terrains and 4.10 gears w/ 5speed tranny

The 4wd is very much slower, could there be somthing wrong with the carb on the 4wd, or is it just the weight difference, or gearing(tranny/axle)? Just curious if others are having the same preformence. The 2wd is pretty darn quick, and you can really feel the second barrel in carb kick in.

the weight is indeed a huge factor, but I think the gearing is huge. IIRC, the 4speed tranny is quite high geared.

I know my '89 22R 2WD on 31's would blow the doors off my '93 3VZE 4Runner 4WD... (and that '89 was HEAVY)

My 2wd is a lot faster than my 4x4 with the same engine (both California smog carbureted 22R). The 2wd is geared higher and I am sure there is less resistance because of smaller tires and a more simple drive train. The 2wd is about 400 lbs lighter according to the pink slips.
