antenna went kaput!

Arg, my damn power antenna on the 4Runner went kaput this morning... It just makes horrible noises and won't go up or down.

Time for the Tacoma Whip mod I guess Anyone interested in buying a non-working power antenna module?

Yeah I'm going to do that so I don't hear it grinding all the time... Actually I'll probably do the Taco whip mod ASAP so I can replace the belt in the power unit, and then sell it.

It was inevitable I suppose, good thing I have Sirius now.

The Toyota electric antenna is a badly designed and cheaply executed. There are so many threads here and over at 4runner.org discussing mast repair etc. I too have experienced probs. Rather than faff about, junk it and buy an aftermarket static or electric alternative( cheaper than a Toyo mast) and save yourself the hassle of having to repair every 18 months or so.

you can try and check for any damage inside the housing, then buy another mast and roll it in.

the problem w/ antenna is that the mast loses lubrication over period of time, its not just the 4runner vehicles.

Can you tell where the relay is located? I hate hearing the grinding sound.

Anyone tried the ebay electric antennas? I thought about doing the Tacoma whip mod myself, but another member here said it wasn't worth it as they had worse reception.

I just disconnected the antenna motor...a few bolts to get the wheel well cover off and...

a pic taken from the wheel well showing the bottom of the motor showing the wire going to the grey connector. I unplugged it there. I've since fixed it so it's reconnected.

Same here a tree snapped it off after a huge @$$ Chevy Suburban couldn't stay on there side of the road and had me ditch to the right into a bunch of bushes...

I am getting rid of the motor and all soo Since I would like to put in a snorkel.
Originally iw as thinking of putting a swithc in but then after reading post about how you have to reposition the motor for the snorkel i was like "Ah! A perfect opportunity to do the Whip mod!!"

So yeah...

For now I have been using the antenna in the rear window, works just fine, plus I am getting a head unit (belated x-mas present) that will have ipod, cd changer, and satelite hook-up all in one.

So radio for me is starting to fade slowly...

Thanks,
Steve

If you dont want to do that taco whip, I think I still have the power antennae from the '96 4runner Im parting out.

PM me if you are interested.

On the other hand, I switched to a non-power antennae on my '91 4Runner since I seemed to always forget to turn the radio off when I would go through car-washes. now the car wash attendants take the antennae off for me.

Thanks

Or when I friend decides to sit on your fender when you are about to go up a ledge so you pop the clutch to bump him off, but as he falls he grabs your antennae for something to hold onto.
