Rear Wheel Hub/Drum Paint Corroded

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering what has caused this paint corrosion....

I noticed the back of one of my rear axle hubs (drum brake backing plate) was all covered in some fluid so I've finally pulled it all apart. I'm going to do all the bearings, seals, etc.

Anyway, the black paint on the drum brake backing plate (both sides) is all bubbled and eaten away.

Both sides of the drum brake hub are now back to bare metal and I'm going to get another backing plate rather than trying to paint this one.

Any ideas what caused the paint to get ruined so bad? could gear oil or brake fluid really get into ALL this paintwork?

Cheers.

Yes, brake fluid is very bad on paint. It's like a paint or varnish remover.
