92 4runner K&N air filter problem

First Merry Christmas from Dixie to all! Last week I decided to clean and recharge my K&N filter on my 4runner. All went well but after I installed it back my truck would not start. After rechecking my hoses and clamps it did fire off, but now it is missing bad and smoking like a freight train. Now my 4runner never smokes and never misses, it idles great and runs great for the many miles it has. But I have drove around the block a time or too just to see if it will stop, but it still just misses and smokes. HELP!!!!

only thing I can think of is that your 4runner sucked in some of the oil from the recharge kit...

Yeah i have to agree i think you oiled that puppy up a tad too much or you didn't let it dry for the 20 min. you were supposed to.

I let it dry over the 20 minutes it states in the directions on the recharge kit.
I even shook it to make sure no oil would drip out. Let it dry in 70deg sun that day. If it did suck up any oil would it not just burn off after I run it awhile. And to answer the other post, not sure if the head gasket was changed out. I am the 4th owner and from all my back checks not sure.

My K&N has been very good to me lets the engine breath a lot better its just a matter of following the directions to maintain the filter properly which is the operators doing not the filter.

Yeah that could be a HG but i mean 40 min after running great then recharging your filter it miss fired that doesn't seem too likely and a clogged air filter can do that but you cleaned it..umm check your spark plugs, fuel filter, distributor cap, wires, everything in the ignition system cuz a faulty coil could do it too. Vacuum hoses could be loose around the manifold too.

If you followed all the directions then id say you are fine about the filter part. Any left over oil should burn up. If I were you I would call up Toyota tomorrow and give them your VIN and ask about your headgasket. I noticed a little white smoke one morning while cranking it up without any warning or event and all went downhill from there. Hopefully im just bein paranoid but It cant hurt to check it out.

you forgot to hook something up. Double check all of your hoses....

I do NOT buy the HG blowing right after doing this...its something he touched or messed with in doing this. Make sure the VAFM connection is nice and clean, make sure all 5 lines are hooked up and that hte main hose isnt ripped. Also make sure all connections are secure.

The headgasket is just a suggestion and should be taken into consideration anyway with a 4runner with that many miles, especially since it would fall into the years for the recall anyway. It can happen at anytime and does not require any prior event taking place before blowing.

If you noticed no differance between a K&N and OEM, you must have an automatic. With a stick you will notice the differance, especially around the 3000 to 4000 rpm range.
My gues is that you knock some of the wires loose.

Yep. You don't have a proper seal. You over-looked something.

I goofed bad.

Just a note to let you know that I found my problem. During this filter cleaning and recharging I had messed with the two screws holding my maf. After all my researching on the forum I went back and found I ripped the foil off the contacts. Well after looking for a used one I decided to try and fix it myself. With the help of my dad the street rod builder, we got that thing soldered back on without the foil and it works great. Thanks for all the help on this great forum. I sure feel stupid now!
