Looks great for $2200..
I've never done the cone filter, but I can tell you that intake air temps get high with the stock airbox. Some sort of cold air induction would really help the truck.. When it's 70 out, intake temps are exceeding 100 degrees.
You'd need to do something custom though..
The 22RE isn't a powerful motor.. Header, exhaust, cam - that's about all you're going to get out of her outside of internal modifications.

i would mod the stock are box and maybe wrap the intake or move it to where the battery is instead of over top of the radiator

Take the exhaust pipe and muffler off, start it up, rev it to 4 grand, close your eyes and pretend you are in a mustang or something.

Best bang for the buck IMO is a good header. I would recommend LCE, even though they are expensive, they are worth it. A good cleaning of the intake plenum can make a huge difference. After ceaning out the plenum on my friends 86, it was like driving a while different truck. This can be done the hard way by taking it apart and cleaning it, or you can also give it the seafoam treatment, which you can learn about by doing a search. If you really decide you want to do a cam (remember you should put a new head gasket in if you do), dont do anything over a TRD level 1 cam. The EFI wont like it and it will decrease mileage significantly.

Best bang for buck is definitely exhaust...

I have a performance head from J and C Enterprises with the bigger valves and Stage 2 Crane Cam but it never really made a difference until I did a 2.25" to 14" Magnaflow to 2.5" exhaust. Now it really runs good...

I've said it before and I'll say it again here, my truck runs absolutely fine with the Crane Stage 2 cam in it. This is the same cam that TRD calls its stage 2 cam. I've also seen many, many others say their trucks are fine with stage 2 cams in them.

Headers make the biggest difference with a full 2.25" exhaust. The whole Stage 1 or Stage 2 cam controversy all depends on the duration of the cam. A good rule of thumb is to keep the duration around 280 for EFI. The Stage 2 Crane cam is a good choice if you have enough mods to compliment it (intake, header, full exhaust, richen up the MAF).

Anything you do is not going to be a huge imporvment.. its still a 22RE... but what I have noticed the most from is a header and exhaust. Did a cam, didnt see any improvment just lower gas mileage... the other thing i REALLY like is the heavy centerforce flywheel.. makes you feel like you have more power around town, and didnt affect the fwy at all...

There is so much out there for the 22re. Its a Japanese motor so look into jdm stuff. I have found conversions to carboratour for it along with superchargers, turbos, cams, headers, heads, all kind of stuff. For everyone out there dont give up on them b/c they are a 4 banger b/c theyll pull too.

Point me to a JDM supercharger or JDM turbo please?

I don't know why you'd go to a carb from EFI.

LC engineering sells Camden/Atkins Rotary superchargers (old school stuff). They also sell "turbo kits" that start at about 2x what a reman'd motor would cost.
Toyosport sold a small Eaton setup - M45, but it's really too small for the 22re, they overdrive it.

Significant mods require a flexible ECU.. The stock ECU has limitations.
Header, exhaust, cam, gear it appropriately - it'll do OK.. Beyond that, it's either major money or some of your own R&D.

Remember even a 25% increase in power is only an extra 30hp or so.....

the best stuff I think is the engnbldr head/cam/valves, with a good filter and LCE header, hi flow cat, 2.25" performance muffler.... I personally think the LCE cams are too much, they claim its the max the ECU can handle, so your operating at the limit... get one thats not as radical and you will get better resualts across the climate/altitiude spectrum... But then if your luck youll have a 140hp motor.. not really enough to call a HUGE imporvment, but you motor is a lot peppier and healthier.. but there is no cure for those 3rd gear mountain pass pulls...

I have personally purchased the "EB Stick" and O/S Valves -- I highly recommend them as an upgrade. That and exaust work is the best bang for your buck I would say. G/L

i'm curious, how much of a loss in gas mileage did you see with the cam and valve upgrades?

a loss of about 70 KM less per tank full -- but hey, that's the price you pay for more get-up. Mind you my block was re-done .30, added the cam and the O/S valves.
