3.4 swap questions (wiring)
i have a 92 4runner that the HG blew.
i bought an engine being told it was from a manual transmission. when i went home to check it, surely enough it came from an automatic!!!
well, i got it for a great deal so ima see what i can work with.
my 4runner has the 5 spd manual transmission.
what problems will i come to when wiring comes around?
1. do i need to buy an OEM manual trans harness for the 3.4 in order to finish the swap?

I had the same situation. I got hosed when I bought my engine. I was also told that it was from a manual from a 98. But it turned out to be a 96 Automatic. They simply supplied me with a ECU from a manual vehicle. You can search the forums for my woes. It was VERY frustrating because it was only firing on one cylinder and it took entirely too long to figure out what was wrong.
Did you get the ECU with the engine? And also what year engine did you get?
But what I ended up doing was re pinning the connectors that plug into the ECU. You need to make sure you get the proper manual ECU that will accept the wiring harness connectors (There are two types for manual vehicles and only the one for autos).
Once you determine what you have and what you bought get yourself the engine wiring harness diagrams FOR BOTH VEHICLES and determine which connector pins need to go where (the diagrams list the connector and pin number) then just remove the appropriate pins and replace. visit the toyota infotech site (something like that) to download the manuals. It is $10 per day unlimited use to download any manual for any Toyota or Scion vehicle.
This might seem confusing but once you dive into doing it there is nothing to it. Just label the wires to where they need to go and take your time.
Other then that you could get yourself another engine wiring harness but that IMHO is a waste of money.....Monies that can be spent on headers or exhaust.
Good luck. Feel free to ask contact for questions.

I just read somewhere that some of the 3.4 from an automatic trans will not work for a manuel. Reason being the crank is not made for a pilot bearing which you will need for your manuel trans.
Wish I could remember where I read it. I been reading alot on this swap lately.
Good luck.

If you call Mike, please buy his harness.
If you have an auto engine going to a stick truck, I would be worried more about having a crank that would take a pilot bearing.
Run the engine VIN, get a stick computer to match it. Pretty easy to just plug and play.

Like pozi was saying...just get both ewd's and double check your wiring. Also be careful not to get an early ecu with the egr valve, less stuff to mess with.

My 98 auto engine didn't have the pilot bearing problem- it went right in.
In response to a post you put on my 3.4 harness post in the for sale section- It would require you to cut back a bunch of the connectors on the harness- specifically the trans stuff. I have a 98 EWD, and There doesn't appear to be much difference as far as engine function- but there are interface differences like clutch cancel switch (easy), cruise cancel from the brake (again easy), and minor items like that.
Sorry- not trying to be a salesman- it could be done, but not without a bit of work. Even if you get the ORS harness, you still need to do a little bit of wiring. You're way ahead by virtue of already having a 5spd; you'll have half the work I did!
