Proper belt tension '02 4Runner

I have a 02 4runner that I replaced all 3 belts on. I have the factory manuals and would like to know what is the proper deflection to have on the belts without using Toyotas belt tension gauge tool?

I guess what I'm looking for is a visualt amount of deflection that is acceptable.

I usually go for about 1/2-3/4 " on the longest run. You basically want the belt to be as loose as possible, without slipping.

^i would something like him. it is hard to describe but you dont want the belt to be too tight where it starts to wear out your pulley bearing and start making noises.

edit: compare to another vehicle is probably the easiest way to describe.

The amount of deflection depends on the span between the pulleys, but most of the time I aim for a bit tighter, just not so thight that I cause premature wear on the ascessories. I usually aim for 3/8-1/2" of deflection on the belts, but again it depends on the situation. After you do enough of them you start to get a feel for what it should look like so it's hard to put that into words.

how exactly do you measure belt deflection? is it from the neutral position (untouched) and then you try to deflect it up or down to its maximum extent, at which point it should be around 1/2" ?

has anyone any experience with a belt tension tool?
