Show me your Leatherman

I need one for work.
I carry a small knife for cutting plastic, but sometimes I need metal band cutters, and I would rather have a Leatherman type of gizmo to use since the other tools on it would come in handy.

There are so many on the market I am confused
I do not need the biggest and baddest one, nor the smallest one.

It would be nice to have the cutters on it, a good blade, phillips and regular bladed screw drivers, and a few other useful things.

Also there are a few brands.
Leatherman and Gerber (I think that is it, not to be confused with the baby food maker) come to mind.

I happen to like the leatherman better, I have a newer designed wave (they dont even sell the old ones I think). Very nice multi-tool and its held up super well. If your worried you may break it they make a titanium handled one.

The gerbers are nice, but I just happen to like the feel of the leathermans better.

Edited to add: I also have an older super tool by leatherman that has never failed me.

I love my Gerber multi-sport. I use the pliers on it all the time. It is way better than a Leatherman because it is easier on the hands to grip tightly.

corey,

get the gerber multi-tool. i have both the leatherman and the gerber multi-tool. in every sense, the gerber is superior. you can flick the multi-tool open w/ one hand and it feels alot more sturdy/robust in your hand. it just feels like a quality tool

i have an older leatherman, it was the year they switched from the leather case to the velcro nylon case. prolly more then 7 years ago, and i must say i love the thing, its come in very handy, but somewhere along the line i lost it, i mean its somewhere, but its packed away since we moved and i cant find it.

but all in all, mid sized leatherman is theway to go..i saw one for 50 at walmart the other day, looked decent, nothin special, but cheap!

I have a Leatherman, not sure what kind it is or anything. I actually was swimming around in a shallow part of Lake Lanier and found it on the bottom.

Problem with the gerber is overtime that 1 hand open mechanism wears out, thats why mine sits in a drawer.

When I lost my Victorinox "Farmer" (great pockeknife!), my wife bought me a Leatherman SuperTool, which I carried for a short while. But being a science teacher at the time, I preferred having something that fit in my pocket. I also didn't like the fact that I had to "open" the tool to get at the knife. So I bought a "Juice" model that has served me well for a few years. The pliers are a little small sometimes but it really is a great tool.

I keep looking at the newer ones though. But I refuse to buy anything with those worthless tiny scissors.

Oh so many choices.
I knew it would be a battle of the Leatherman verses the Gerber

A guy at work must have the Gerber.
Every morning in our POD meeting he whips it out and flicks it open with one hand, then stabs the top of his coffee cup to let it cool down.

I've got a no name brand piece of crap multitool that my dad got as shwag from some outdoor expo. It's basically a leatherman ripoff, but I've since lost one of the bolts, meaning its pretty useless. Maybe this thread might point me in the right direction as to what to get

I'm a Gerber baby...

Multi-sport user of several years. Many camping, hiking, climbing, and mtb trips and the thing just won't die. Blew through 2 leathermans in as many years...

I have an old Gerber, though its actually an upgrade for me; my original leatherman didn't lock. It's a little bulky but it works. As you can see, I broke one of the tools by trying to use it to pry apart something that was obviously stronger than it. I'd go with a leatherman wave as they feel nice in your hand, but then again, the big pliers on the Gerber have helped me out repeatedly.

I've used both the leatherman and gerber multitools, I have to say, like almost any two big name products, they both have strength and weknesses. They are both QUALITY products, and are fairly similar, just depends on preference, of whcih I really have none, they are both equally great tools to me.

It does not look like Gerber has a generic Multi Tool anymore.
As others, they must have branched out more.

They have a ton.

Kind of like the Needle Lock one.

My main purpose of venturing out today on Black Friday was to pick up a nice Gerber or Leatherman.
I am kind of leaning towards the one above I saw on Cabela's site.

I came home empty.
Gosh I love the Internet, I am going to buy one online, as I do lots of goods.

I am all for supporting my local town and all, but many shops just do not have my flavor of stuff I want, hence why I am now ordering my cargo pants all online.

91, I saw the Gerber 400 at Fred's, but not the 800.
I think the guy at work must have the Recoil one.
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...895&hasJS=true

As I remember pushing a button on it and the pliers pooped out like a bloody mary knife.
Very cool!

Whatever I get it, it must be able to cut steel banding like you see that holds stuff to wooden pallets.
I need to look through these and see if any of these models can do that.

That 800 looks good too.

PS, kind of have it narrowed down to two of the Gerbers.
The Recoil Multi Tool

Multi Plier 800

On the 800 it says the pliers are spring loaded, but not sure if that means they pop out like a bloody mary knife like the Recoil model does.

This is the one I pack with me every day. It's an SOG Powerlock S60. Granted, it's an expensive thing, but I got it as a gift. I like it better than any of the Gerber's or Leatherman's. It is a little more suited towards my line of work.

Came today, very nice quality.

Good thing it has a safety on it, you would not want it opening up in your pocket.

I have both a Gerber multi-tool and a Leatherman Charge. The Gerber is nice.... the flick open pliers are very impressive to the children. Seems like a well built tool. The plastic blade lock seems cheesy. Has worked well over time, but has a pretty easy life. The newer Gerber suspension multi-tool has nice ergonomics. The pliers have a spring to open them, so one handed use is very feasible. They do seem a little fragile.

The Leatherman Charge is a Wave with a Titanium housing. The best features on this tool are the external opening blades. Very handy one hand operation. Good quality. My only gripe is that the Titanium makes the tool a little chunky. Doing it all over, I would buy the WAVE. Slightly slimmer profile... same tools. A good friend of mine is a dairy farmer. He uses his WAVE constantly... and not gingerly. I've seen him abuse that tool. He also breaks them a lot. In fact, he has 2 of them. When one breaks he sends it back to Leatherman for a repair & has the backup so he isn't without. In spite of the breakage, he has not found a tool he likes better.
