Fitting a bigger spare in the stock location

I have been running 33 x 12.50 tires and the spare did sort of fit into the stock location but bearly and it bothered me the way wouldn't raise up all the way. So I decided to make it fit properly:

The whole thing will unbolt from the truck (4 bolts each side), so I took it off and cut it in two:

Some angle iron fits nicely into the top slot:

Welded back together:

There is also room to move the raising mechanism back about an inch or so. I did this to center the mechanism and help minumize stress on it. (had to drill a few new holes)

Painted and bolted back on:

The spare now goes up all the way:

The other thing you can do is get those slots off an earlier style truck/4Runner. They are flat and straight.
