Anybody done this before? Do I have to take the head off my 22r to replace the chain? The Haynes manual says I do, but I thought I could just loosen the head bolts? Also the new kit came with sprockets, do these really wear out?

nope i didnt, just make sure you get a proper seal, and yes they wear out. if you replace them now, it will save you replace everything. i used the rtv for oil when i did mine.

 

On the 22re motor the head does not have to come off to repplace the timing chain.

You will need to remove the timing cover which requires a good deal of parts to be removed.

You will need to remove the radiator, The ac compressor if you have one, the alternator, power steering pump,or more or less every thing on the front side of the motor but you do not have to remove the head.

Before you start the motor when you are done with the project make sue you change the oil!!! While you are taking the front cover off water will always spill back into the motor and antfreeze and oil and bearing surfaces do not like each other!

While you are at it replace the oil pump, water pump, front main seal.

Also while you are there I would drop the oil pan and clean out all of the crap that was once part of the timing chain and related parts.

Will the oil pump need to be primed? I didn't put a new pump in but all the oil must have drained out of it when i took the timing chain cover off. The dummy light says that I have pressure, but my gut says I don't. I looked in the oil cap hole and can't see much oil moving around. So my question is, do these pumps have to be primed and how?

 

And DON'T loosen the headbolts ever unless the head is coming off and a new gasket is going on.

You may get lucky, but probably not.
