Howdy all, I have a junkyard 22re that came off a 1989 2wd pickup, I was wondering if it would be possible to make the long block into a 22r that will be going into a 1984 4x4 sr5 pickup. (I have everything on the sr5 except the engine since the last owner had blown theirs up)
I've seen a lot of conflicting opinions, and no videos about anyone's process, would it be possible?

Thank you.
I think everything off the 22r should bolt on the 22re no problem.
Yes, it’s definitely possible to turn that Toyota 22RE engine long block into a usable setup for your 1984 4x4 SR5, since the 22R and 22RE share the same basic block and most external parts, but you’ll be doing a hybrid build. You’ll want to swap over your 4x4-specific 22R intake, carb setup (or keep EFI if you’re converting wiring), timing cover, oil pan, and pickup tube so it matches the 4WD chassis and clears the front diff. The main difference is the EFI head and accessories on the 22RE, but the bottom end compatibility is what makes this swap common. Just plan on mixing parts carefully and double-checking timing cover, oil pan, and distributor setup so everything lines up cleanly.
