3.0 - 22re swap. Motor mounts. Who'se done them?
Hi everyone. I bought this truck recently for $600. I have ALWAYS wanted an '89-'95 EXT cab with 4wd, standard transmission, and a 4 cyl motor, so here we go.
Before anyone beats me to it.. yes, I know, just put a 3.4 in. It will be much easier. Perhaps I'm a glutton for punishment, maybe I just like the 4 cyl better, but most of all I'm working with what I have. A perfectly good running and driving 4cyl 5 speed 4wd truck that is seriously eaten up with rust, and a pretty nice V6 5spd 4wd with a blown motor.
I'm fairly far along in the project at this point, and feeling considerably less intimidated than before. I have both sets of motors and transmissions removed, and even made my money back on one of the two $600 trucks from selling parts.
I have the dash completely disassembled, and wiring harness switched out inside the cab. everything seems to be plugging up just fine. had to change out the ignition switches, but other than that everything seems to be plug and play. even the rear harness, under the passenger seat hooked up just fine which i did not expect.
Next is to figure out the motor mounting situation. I have something of a plan (if you can call it that) brewing up in my head, but I would appreciate any input from somebody with more experience than myself with this job
My best idea so far is cutting the old ones off the frame with the trusty angle grinder. Bolt 4 cyl frame mounts onto the block, bolting the block up to the transmission, and then setting the motor down and tacking the mounts to the frame. Then of course un bolting/removing the block and finish the welding job.
Any tips to assist me in the process would be greatly appreciated. If you have pictures of the job you did, that would be great, and if you have any better ideas that would be great too.
Thanks in advance,
Ray.

I haven't done the swap your discussing so my input is limited but.... Aren't mounts the same for both 22RE and 3.0? Meaning you shouldn't need to cut frame supports out of 3.0 truck to mount 22Re in it. The one I see in photo doesn't look bad or is that from the donor?

nope. here's a picture of the donor mount. and a side by side comparison of the v6 mount. I wont be using the mounts off that frame for obvious reasons. i'm sure i could clean them up if i had to, but i have another frame i can chop on before it goes off for scrap.

I am going the other way 22R to 3.4
Your plan is a good one I used all new Mounts
Make sure it is spot on other wise the transmission mount will be off .
To far front radiator clearance might be a issue
I guess you wanted to pull the dash out and do the extra work .
I am very lazy so just merge the two wiring harnesses
While the dash is out good time for a new heater core and evap coil if you have AC

yeah.. seems there is a lot of aftermarket stuff out there for the 3.4 lovers, but not for the 22re.
honestly pulling apart the dash and the wiring harnesses has been the only straight forward part so far. take out screws and bolts.. pull harness, replace.
think my core and coil are good...just needed a good cleaning. something i've done to all of my toyotas, disassemble the dash and clean out all the heater vents and what not. i dont like breathing mouse poop.

honestly if you ask me, it's something that should be done every year. that stuff builds up fast, (whether its from critters crawling around and making nests, or just dirt, dust and old/dead skin cells) and can cause some serious health issues for some people.

I have to make a pair myself. I have a 3.slo to 22R swap in progress. I have some plate steel to fab some up. I was thing to make another pair to put up on ebay. The 22re mounts are more to the front and at a different angle than 3.slo so a little more effort is required than just a flat plate. Also the crossmember is 4" more to the front than 3.0 so its better to just locate a 22re Xmember. I'm using the factory chain drive case and r150 trans.
No one makes anything for this swap since its always a 3.4 or gm 4.3 or sbc that goes in.

Finished product
I actually got my mounts finished and the motor in. I cut the original mounts off a 22re frame and they fit up just fine on the v6 frame. i'll try and upload a few pictures. As for the transmission and xmember, i just used the w56 and w56 xmember. everything mounted up just fine, just had to shorten the drive shaft. if i'm not mistaken it was 25 1/4 inches from the drive flange on the back of the transfer case to the centers of the bolt holes for the carrier bearing.
