Cebby, what ever came of this? I have a spring in a spare set that I am rebuilding that is very similar sounding to yours. I'd prefer to replace it if I could but can't find any posts stating wether or not it could be replaced without having to pull one from a donor.

It had no effect on the operation of the hub. You'll be fine with the original.
