i see questions about pulling and towing with 5th gen alot. Wanted to post some results from a trip i just did. I pulled my 87 4runner on a uhaul dolly behind my 15 trail edition from san diego to baton rouge.
Details : the 87 is stock aside from 31” tires. Weighs in at around 3500 pounds. Uhaul dolly is 1500 pounds. I have a CBI rear bumper on the 5th gen with a 3” suspension and 285 tires. I used the manual shift mode at all times, and stayed at a steady 65-70mph leaving lots of space to stop. Had no issues.

i think your weight estimate of 1500 pounds for the U-Haul tow dolley is a bit off. I don't think my tandem axle trailer weighs 1500 and my tow dolley might weigh 400.
So did you pull the rear driveshaft when towing the 4Runner?
marlin crawler says the rear output shaft does not get properly lubed

yes i pulled the rear shaft, for several reason including the diff and tranny oil, also theft deterent ha. The 1500 pound estimate came from uhaul, so it could be wrong but it was a hefty dolly.
Whoa.... I can't say I would have tried that. LOL! I'm on 285's and have a hard time when it is loaded for camping... Sweet looking Runners, though!
Out of curiosity, what was your average MPG?
unfortunately my only options were to either pull it with me or sell it, and i have too much work into her to sell at the time being. Lucky for me the drive from san diego to baton rouge is at as a pancake. According to my dash readout, i averaged 13 mpg.
I pull a 3500lb-ish RV several times a year all over Texas and CO normally with a passenger and lots of gear. I use a weight distribution hitch, have supplemental air bags in the rear, and trailer brakes. It always pulls it fine. The only concern I ever have is the tranny getting into the 230’s sometimes when it’s really working in the mountains.
