I am aware of the re-gearing of the front. I just want to get her back on the road again.
I checked out a donor truck and I am a bit confused..
It's an 89 V6 Automatic with manual locking hubs which I thought would be great as I wanted to re-gear. But, when I looked at the VIN plate:
it's saying G292 which is 8" with 4:10's and 2 pinion which is what I have on my 4cyl. According to LCE Toyota mislabeled some trucks as having 2 pinion. When I looked under at the diff:
it did have the 4 fins that would indicate that it was the 4 pinion type. I wonder if they mislabeled the gear ratio as well. I guess the next step would be to
raise the truck and spin the wheels, right? if it's closer to 4 revolutions of the tire then it's the 4:10 and closer to 4 and a half it would be the 4:56?
Anyone with a V6 automatic that can drop some diff knowledge?

I don't know much about 2 or 4 pinions, but I do know it will be 4.1 rotations of the DRIVELINE for ONE rotation of the tire for a 4:10 and if you don't move both tires together it will throw you off. So you are better off marking your driveshaft and slowly pushing the truck forward in gear while you watch how many times it turns (mark the tire also so you can get one rotation).
so I finally got to wrenching on the rig today..bought me an '89 V6 as a parts truck mostly for the rear differential.
I took out the old one and I didn't know I was running a welded diff. I'm no expert but I think they did a pretty
$#!++y job, well because the weld failed and there are weld splatters? everywhere.
The side gears were pretty chewed up. I'm wondering, could the little bits have caused the whole thing to fail?
Also, I had a hell of a time pulling on the passenger axle shaft (broke a slide hammer)

millball, it says on your signature that you have v6 brakes on your 87. I had to use the passenger rear axle shaft from my v6 parts truck with the brakes attached to it. Does that mean that I have a v6 brake too? The splines on the old axle shaft had about 1/2" at the tip that was completely gone. I was hammering on the thing for a while but decided to be smrt & search yotatech..Good thing I didn't mess up the new (old) third!

Far as I know, it's only the front discs and calipers that are larger. Rear drum brakes are Same-same.
5 miles is a piece, but with volcanoes, who knows?? Good luck.
