Transmission Fluid
I have a 1988 Toyota 4runner with an automatic transmission. I only drove it for about a month before the motor started slinging oil everywhere. I rebuilt the engine and now it's back on the road. I used Castrol Transmax Import Multi- Vehicle transmission fluid in the transmission and it seems to shift fine however, after doing some research i'm wondering if I chose the correct type fluid. It states that it is for most Toyota's but I have also read that I should use Dextron VI among other types. Did I make the correct choice in selecting the fluid or do I need to change to a different type?

Thanks Co 94 PU, I thought Dexron ll was what it called for but I noticed other sites calling for different types. I think Advance Auto said it took dexron Vl but I don’t think they even made that type fluid back in 1988. I hate bothering you guys with such simple questions but I don’t want to tear up the transmission after just getting the Toyota back on the road. I have consistenly received great advice on this site so I feel confident with the answers received. I did research the internet before posting on Yotatech but kept finding different answers concerning the fluid type.

These transmissions originally used Dexron II. Dexron III superseded Dexron II sometime in the mid 1990's. Any transmission fluid that meets either Dexron II or Dexron III requirements would be fine, and that includes Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle.
GM pulled the license for Dexron II and III several years ago. This is why you can't go to the store and find a bottle labeled "Dexron III". Companies still make Dexron III compatible fluids, but they can't call it Dexron III anymore since they don't have a license. They generally use the name "Dex/Merc" to indicate a Dexron II and III type fluid.
I use Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc in my transmission. I think it is probably the closest thing to the fluid that was originally in the transmission that has been operating flawlessly for 202,000 miles. I would not hesitate to use Transmax Import Mulit-Vehicle either since it meets Dexron II and III requirements.
Castrol Dex/Merc, Import Multi-vehicle, or Dex VI are all acceptable for your transmission.

Thanks, It seemed to be working fine with the Castrol Transmax Import transmission fluid but after going through the trouble of having the engine rebuilt and replacing so many parts due to the vehicle sitting up for so long I didn't want to use ther wrong fluid to cause even more work. Thanks again for all the responses.
