Would it be possible to put a cummins deisel in to an 89 pickup. The truck would have a sas and be running dana 60's. I was just thinking insted of buying a bigger truck to pull my crawler I could use the one I got. Currently I personly have $0 in it, so in my opinion it would be worth spending quiet a bit to do a conversion and still be justifiable. The truck is in awesome shape I have been offered over $5000 for it and turned it down. Well there is one problem I got to fix this week is I have to replace the #1, #2, and lock solenoid in the transmission. (hope it fixes the isssue) If not I will be in the market for a swap sooner than I thought. I have also considered a lexus v-8 swap. I just don't know how it would pull. I would love to stay all Toyota. I guess my main consern is the firewall clearance of the cummins. Would it clear with out any modifications? It would just be so nice to pull my Toyota with my other Toyota to trail rides.

 

I'm guessing that you talking about the 5.9l six found in Dodge trucks? If so, I wouldn't bet on it fitting in your engine bay, it is quite a long engine and requires a relatively large radiator. Now if you wanted to do something a little radical, a back-to-front mid-engine mount at the front of the bed would be possible....

 

Dont think Ill go that far. Thats a little to radical. I don't really think there is enough clearance there either just wondering if anyone knew for sure. They are putting them in 80's model cruisers, so I thought there might be a slight chance that it would fit.

 

Lots of things fit under the hood of older cruisers since they came from the factory with a very long straight six in the first place. I think their engine bay is nearly a foot longer than on in a pickup/4Runner.

 

I think we need more threads that say "Diesel...ITS DONE" rather than "is it possible?"

Anything is possible. I could put a blown 502 in my 4runner. Doesn't mean its plausible.

How about doing what I'm doing and putting a 4 cyl turbo diesel Toyota motor in it? I've got one on order right now and stock it puts out 230lb ft @ 2000rpm and 165hp @ 3400-3600rpm. And it will get decent mileage. I'm putting it in a 92 xtra cab 4x4 V6. Its an automatic but supposidly these diesel autos are much better than the gas jobs we have here. Just another option. And my thoughts are the same as yours for costs. I bought the truck for cheap and doing all the work myself I will have practically a brand new diesel 4x4 sitting in my yard for under $7000. Not too shabby. If your up to a Cummins swap I'm sure you could put a motor in that was already designed for the engine bay in the first place.

 

I'll do it! First tho, im going to have to spend 5 years asking around on message boards if anyone has done it. Then I will ask if anyone knows where I can get a "kit" to install it. Of course, i might start it after 5 years, I might not. But SOME DAY!! 15 years from now, when I put a 502 in a 4runner, you will owe me that dollar!

i'm getting a 3.0L Turbo toyota diesel from the menanites (germans) down here, from the 3rd gen diesel 4runners & Hilux Surf. around 180-200hp...but i cant remember at what RPM...when i actuall GET the engine i will post the swap.

I'll take lots of pictures and say what all was tricky about it which from what I have heard is the wiring. The motor is due to be at my house by the end of July or early August. I sent my money out for it today so it is final my beast is gonna be a diesel. They get quite good mileage as well. I figure I should be over 35mpg but I am aiming for over 40 and hopefully closer to 50 if I gear it all right and take it easy on the old go pedal. But I would be happy with between 35 and 40. These are computer controlled motors so if you chip them you can up the power by around 30% according to what I have read on the Australian boards. But I'm thinking I'll be happy with 15hp and 50lb ft over the 3vze. With a bit larger exhaust I think it will be a bit more than that.

Thats a link to a video with a truck from New Zealand with the turbo diesel in it. But obviously not in perfect shape as it is blowing smoke. The one I'm getting is supposed to be in very good shape so it should not do that.

 

It took a mere 3 hours I've done a blown 454, same block and the mechanics of the swap are virtually identical. We didn't put it under the hood though, it went in the front of the bed turned back-to front with the tranny in front of it and a pair of transfer cases to get power going the right way. No, there are no kits.

 

a 4bt cummins would fit . they can be found in many bread trucks and will bolt to a th400 chevy tranny. just my .02 but it would be far better for the size of the truck you have. 4 cylinder big turbo diesel

 

you could probably fit one of the older 4cyl cummins that they used in the UPS trucks for awhile. but they where non turbo i believe. just dont think that it would work to put the 6cyl in there its too long. AND too HEAVY

 

personally i like the newer 4cyl izuzu turbo diesel its got some serious balls

 

Remember to that you'll have to find the $$$$ to regear the diffs.

Hey 82 yota where are you getting that diesel motor from?

 

Its a company called Jarco Inc. Do a google search on them and also go to www.toyotadiesel.com . There are lots of swaps on there. And to FredTJ no I wont have to regear. I've read on many boards from the Australian sites and they say 4.30s are good to go with that and I plan to step up to 32 inch tires. If I were to regear I would go to 3.90s or 4.10s and Toyota already makes both of those ratios so its just a matter of finding them from a junkyard. The redline on this motor is 4600 so it is a happy revver. I'm getting the auto so it will do its thing and they usually don't rev over 3000-3500 before they shift.
