Greetings,
Why would you turn off Software/hardware DEP? The concept is very cool. It rogue code from executing and seems that it would be a good trade off for a small amount of memory.

Cool on FF going back on, I dunno what that was from. I haven't seen it... hmmm..

The folder could be coming up because a shortcut got created in the Startup folder. I have a reoccurring shortcut to "desktop.ini" showing up in there, which causes it to open up in notepad when the machine boots. I had that problem before SP2 though, but it's something common happening on two of my machines.

Anyway!
  • RIGHT-Click on the Start button.
  • Click EXPLORE
  • Click on PROGRAMS
  • Click on STARTUP
Check the list of shortcuts in there and see if one of them is a link to the System32 folder.

For me, it comes from a preference of not having more code sitting on the the data exception handler. If you don't have the CPU hardware support for the detector, then it's eating more than just code space - it's eating CPU.

Mark, thanks for the tip, but System32 folder wasn't in there.

Bob, did you look in MSconfig?
SP2 may have made the link in your Start UP area in there.

I keep a shortcut in my system tray so I can get to it anytime.
Right click your desktop and choose to make a new shortcut.
Paste this info in, and after making the shortcut, right click it and drag to the sys tray and choose "move here."

C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries\msconfig.exe

I will not put on SP2 yet, I am headache free on my PC, and it runs fine.
Perhaps later if they revise it some more.

I should test it out on my old desktop in the other room and see how it works.

Good call, Corey, thanks! There was a new file showing as "C:\L ENG..." that fixed the problem. Day 3 and I'm still impressed with SP2. The machine boots much more quickly, surfing is faster, no apparent glitches that can't be fixed with a few mouse clicks once I'm told what to click.

Before I "upgraded", I did my daily manual check for Critical Updates. I thought it only gave the one choice to update to SP2, so it seems like XP users will be forced to install SP2 to get any more Critical Updates, unless I'm not recalling correctly.

This is not directly related to SP2, as it does not do this on a clean install. Something else on your computer caused this to happen once SP2 was installed.

With a pre-SP2 installation of XP, click "Custom Install" on the updates page, then click the button labeled "Review Other Updates".

That IS a virus. I know it's not SP2 related, because my sis's computer does the same thing, and she hasn't updated it in 2 years (I know... I know). So I'm gonna be playing virus killer sometime this weekend, as well as getting the whole thing up to date.

Oh yeah... I've been running the "official release" of SP2 for 2 days, and I haven't had a single problem.

Well, something new I hadn't noticed until the screen saver activated. When returning from screen saver to the desktop, the screen goes black for a count of 1-2, then the monitor clicks like it does when first turned on in the morning, and the desktop is on again. Just an annoyance I guess, but I'm wondering if it's bad for my new CRT to do whatever it's doing. Anyone else notice this? Thoughts?

Churnd, I'm vigilant with my anti-virus precautions. Real-time NAV, weekly scans with Housecall, 3X weekly scans with Ad-Aware and Spybot, and Spyware Blaster running in the background. All scan clean.

Nope... what's happening is that the screen is changing refresh rates when the screen saver cycles. It's always confused me as to why, but some monitors actually flip a mechanical relay when changing the refresh rates. I have an old ZDS monitor that's been doing it for years and it's fine.

The net source of the change is that the screen saver engine has been tweaked a bit. It seems that some monitors were having issues going to a low power state when they were at a higher refresh rate.

Weird. I wonder if there's any such thing as a virus that goes in, changes a setting, then deletes itself? Either way, that folder ain't supposed to pop up. On my sis's machine, I keep closing out the folder and it keeps popping back up. Same thing when I minimize it... it'll pop right back up. Very annoying b/c I can't get anything done with it. Even when I try to move it to the background, it comes back to the front. I might have to boot it to safe mode to get everything in order again.

SP2 installed on old PC

OK, just got done putting it on my older PIII 500 in the other room.
Took a long time, even with cable, probably due to the older CPU installing on the fly as it downloads.
Yes, it installs stuff it looks like as it is also downloading stuff.

So far so good, no crashes.
I do not like the nag balloon though from the little red shield that tells me I have auto update turned off down by the clock.
I like to update stuff myself, as that leaves the CPU more freedom from having stuff running in the background when I do not need it.

I think I read the answer on here how to get rid of the nag balloon, so I will hunt for it.

With SP1 both XP firewalls had to be turned off in order for the PCs to talk to each other over my Netgear 614 router/NAT firewall.
Not so with SP2.

I left the firewall turned on the older PC, and I can access it from my new PC just fine.
I was accessing MP3s from the older PC, and played them on the new PC without a hitch.
Not sure if the XP firewall is really needed with my router or not.

I may take the plunge today and install it on my new PC, but not 100% positive yet.
I had read SP2 has issues with Unreal Tournament 2004, and I had planned on doing some gaming tonight.

PS, looks like UT 2004 is not on the hit lsit anymore.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130
Unless it is somewhere else that I read it.

These items here I use are no longer on the above list:
Nero 6
Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition
StarCraft
Diskeeper
Cute FTP 5.0
Outlook 2000

PS, another update.
Pop up blocker works great.
I sent myself a PM, and it refused to open it up here and I got a screen telling me what it blocked.
I then set the software to allow pop ups here.

I will take off the Google Toolabar from my new PC when I put SP2 on.
The Google Toolbar has been letting in way to many pop ups as of late.

Way to go Microsoft.
IE 6 now with pop up blocking.
It just keeps getting better and better.

Googled and found this.
WinXP SP2 Security Center still appears after I check the item

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the security center.. Click on "Change the way Security center alerts
me" and uncheck the "firewall" box, as well as any other you want.
I will just uncheck "Auto Updates" from the list for both PCs.
I think I will go fetch SP2 for my main PC in a few...

Inatalled on main PC

Well it is on, and it did not take long since this CPU is much bigger than my old PC.
It runs great, but the pop up blocker is already tricked from a Toyota forum that is infamous for pop ups.

It did stop it and I got the warning window, but when I clicked out of it the dang pop up appeared.

Thanks for trying anyway MS
I hope there is a way to update the pop up blocker as more and more spammers get smarter with their workarounds.

Corey, I reinstalled Google Toolbar and it's catching most of the popup/popunders SP2 misses (but not the one in your link). The MS blocker really is versatile, though, and worth the update alone, IMO.

Yeah, that nagging balloon was irritating until I implemented Mark's kill procedure. Good luck with your new box.

Here is another bug Bob.
http://www.pnw4runners.com/temp2/security_center.jpg

I have the box unchecked for auto updates in the "Change the way security center" alerts you, and it does not nag me on boot up with the balloon anymore.

But...as you can see, it does not detect Mcafee 6
It does at first as the balloon does not appear, but later the little red shield by the clock pops up telling me something is wrong.

Sure enough, click into it and it says Mcafee is turned off.
You can even go into the SC and see that the light is green for Mcafee, but after being on the desktop for a few minutes the light goes red.

What I will have to do is uncheck the box is how it alerts me so it will not pop up anymore, or I may upgrade to Mcafee 8 which I do have.
Have not got around to it yet.
