Who's on your WLAN??

Who's on your WLAN??

...just about anyone.

Check this out... This is a map of the US that shows the wireless hubs currently in operation - AND their SSID:

http://wigle.net/gps/gps/Map/onlinem...30000000000001

Wanna see something fun? Enter "linksys" into the "filter by" box and click "filter". Those are effectively the people that have basically bought a Linksys wireless hub, taken it home, and just plugged it in.

OMG...

Data gets into their database through manual entry - either you enter your own or someone's been wardriving your 'hood and logged it for you.

My guess is that you didn't enter it, so "someone entered it for you".

Fun huh?

WOW! Ok I am going to do a test and change the SSID and see how long it takes for it to change. I setup that network 1yr 4mo ago when I moved here.

There are 2 here that don't show up on that map and both have the "hide SSID" on...............

Double-click your wireless network connection status icon --> View wireless networks --> change advanced settings --> wireless networks tab --> highlight the network in question --> click properties (your SSID will be at the top)

I am sure there is faster way, but that's how I do it.

For those that don't know... the SSID is the "name" your wireless network has. When you mouse over the wireless icon in the bottom right corner, you'll see at the top of the pop-up box next to "Wireless Internet Connection" your SSID in parenthesis.

Mine doesn't show up. I never broadcast it though.

Thank you Christian and Chris but I think I'll just bag it... there's no wireless icon showing anywhere.

Mine is set to not broadcast but it is there. Someone must have "sniffed" it. I am thinking one of the neighbors that isn't on that map.

??? it's playing okay with FF here...

Shannon... I can't remember the UI for the router, so it's a bit hard to walk you through it, but you won't have a wireless icon at the house 'cause you're hard wired in. Up top won't have one either 'cause I'm faking it up there with a bridge.

The easiest way for you to see if you're on the page is to enter your address in the fields on the right side of the page and search that way.

Okay, thanks Mark. It was driving me batty. I was looking in every nook and cranny I could think of to find that stupid icon. Nevermind then, I appreciate the help and suggestion.
