Video Game Review Thread

Thought it would be nice to have a thread kind of like Corey's thread on movies... but with video games. When posting, please post as follows:

Game title:
Genre:
System:
How often you play (any game):
Days played (specific title):
On/offline play:
Description/review:
1 - 10 rating (1 bad/10 awesome):

Alright, I'll start

Amped 3

Xbox 360
Every night
3 days
Offline (campaign)

Well, it's a snowboarding game. I really like this game. Usually with games where you have to complete several arbitrary goals (Tony Hawk), I get bored very easily. This game has somewhat the same gameplay as the Tony Hawk series, but with awesome backdrops, good backcountry riding, as well as park stuff... The game also has to ability to pull out sleds that you accumulate through completing tasks... or, from the first time you play, you have a snowmobile you can ride. The trick system is pretty simple but works good. One thing I like is that the game is very goofy in the cut scenes and whatnot. All in all, it is a good game. There are 7 mountains to choose from, each with at least 3 areas to ride (areas like lower resort, upper resort, backcountry). etc...). Player customization is pretty good. You can customize your face, hair, skin tone, goggles, jackets/shirts, pants, boots, snowboard, bindings. Of course, you only have a limited amount of items when first starting, so it motivates you to push through the game and find the tasks that give you "new gear" as a reward. Lastly... last night, I was riding around the Valle Nevado Mtn. in Chile and saw a "Toyota Sellout" task. Sellout tasks are where you have to impress the sponsors and if you are successful, you get "bling" (cars, deli sandwiches...?? haha, vacations, etc...). Nothing you can really use, but it's just rewards to show off what sponsors you've got. Back to the Toyota Sellout task. After winning that one, guess what I got. A brand new FJ Cruiser! Yup! Heh heh... if only it was real. They actually have an FJ Cruiser in Voodoo Blue sitting on the slope for you to look at. Pretty accurate in detail. I normally like multiplayer games, but this is a good one to play when you're not doing anything else, or your friends aren't over/or online.

I give this game a 9/10

I like the game a lot, but it could be better. My big peeve of this game is the lack of multiplayer (split-screen, or online).

Game title: DELTA FORCE: BLACK HAWK DOWN: TASK FORCE DELTA
Genre: first person shooter
System: PC
How often you play (any game): 2-3 days a week
Days played (specific title):
On/offline play: ONLINE only... you kidding with offline????? lol...
Description/review: killer action. literally. kill or be killed. plain and simple.
1 - 10 rating (1 bad/10 awesome): 8... until you read the next game...

Game title: JOINT OPERATIONS: ESCALATION: COMBINED ARMS
Genre: first person shooter
System: PC (it better be a kick ass system or else...)
How often you play (any game): LOTS!!!!!
Days played (specific title): work days...
On/offline play: ONLINE!!!!!!
Description/review: this game upgraded the DELTA FORCE series. the biggest thing for me, is REALISTIC BULLET trajectories. in the DF series, bullets travelled a straight line. but in the game, even the kind of ammo (weight-wise) affects the trajectory.

it also added vehicle controls. you can now fly helos (either the pilot or gunner of apache, for example), drive tanks (as driver, shooter or commander) and various others.

bigger play area too.

1 - 10 rating (1 bad/10 awesome): 9. if one thing, i hate the "tracer" mode during online play. it kinda shows you where your bullets are coming from, to the other team. and visa versa.

otherwise, only way to make this game better is more weapons and even better graphics.

i mentioned you need a kick ass machine to play this. recently acquired a new machine for work. i spec'ed out pentium EE with hyperthreading. included a nvidia 7900 card and it rocks on it. cant wait to get a another 7900 card and SLI them together for even better performance!!!!!

on my previous machine i had a pentium 2.8 and a mid range ATI card. running JO, i was getting frame rates in the teens. on the new machine, it was close to the upper 40s/low 50s...

Game title: Gears of War
Genre: 3rd person shooter/ action
System: XBOX 360
How often you play (any game): Only borrowed if from a friend, but played every day since then.
Days played (specific title): 2
On/offline play: I've only played offline and split screen multiplayer

Description/review: Incredibly intense and realistic campaign mode. Taking cover is essential to surviving and winning (just like real life). Charge in like you're Rambo (or Master Chief) and you'll die. Especially on the higher difficulties.

Co-op campaign is very slick. Well done.

Graphics are fantastic, and super moody. It's the most graphically violent game I've ever played ... blast a Locust up close with a shotgun, and depending on where you hit it, body chunks go flying, intestines, ribs, brains, spill out. Kinda crazy, but you can turn it off if you're not into that.

Basically it's probably the most intense single player/ co op game I've played.

The sound is incredible, too.

1 - 10 rating (1 bad/10 awesome): 9. Campaign was too short.
