This would be better suited for our computer talk forum, so I am moving it.
But, if you are on cable and not running a router, you can use Win 98s built in IP Config tool by typing in I think ipconfig.exe at the Run command.

Better yet is to make a shortcut to it on your taskbar.

If you have XP, it does not come with this utility, and you must use a command prompt instead by typing in:
ipconfig /help ((there is a space after the letter g in config before the /))
at the command window.
From the help menu you will see your commands you type in.

I do not use that with XP, I use the IP Config tool made for Win 2000 which works fine with XP.
Get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...wntipcfg-o.asp

Download and run the setup file.

If you are behind a router, you must log into it instead using your routers setup page via your web browser, and you will see in there how to release and renew your IP.
When you are behind a router, you can not renew it from the ipconfig tool.
At least not on my system.

This is a question for your ISP...you have no control over it.
(well...no control over your public IP address)

disconnect your connection for about 3 days.

your IP address lease is usually 72 hours.

if not, just keep running

IPCONFIG /RELEASE ALL

IPCONFIG /RENEW

over and over on a batch file, if you are running win2k /xp and see if the DHCP server on your ISP is smart enough...

lol... i wouldnt run it for more than a minute though... you might get flagged for doing something bad... lol.........

Greetings,
You can usually figure out the IP address range your ISP is using. for example if your on 192.168.7.34 255.255.255.0, then you can generally use any number from 192.168.7.1-192.168.7.254. with the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 You can try to cheat by putting in a static address instead of letting your ISP pick it. This may work, it may not.
This is a VERY simplified version of what you can do. You should have a basic concept of networking to actually do this, or you can just try plugging in numbers and see what happens

The cool thing about Comcast cable is they let you change yours on the fly.
As long as I keep resetting it on my routers page in IE, I will get a new IP every time I hit the renew button.

Greetings,

Can you imagine the size of their DHCP logs!!! They must be huge. Makes no sense to allow that but what the heck.
