Old post, but I just read today in PC World that a newer Ubuntu Linux is out.
http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/
It is called Gutsy Gibbon, and much better than the prior version of Ubuntu I tried before.
I will try this on my old PC when I get some free time.
I had good luck with the prior one I tired out before.

I have played with a couple of Fedora Cores as well as CentOS releases and love them. I wish I had more time to....Wait a minute, I do have enough time. Dang it, look what y'all got started! Now I'm going to have to start playing with it again.

I could never get the old Ubuntu I tried to install.
I had to boot off of the CD, then install it and run it.
As soon as you restarted the PC, it was gone.
Maybe I can setup the new one so it will run with XP on my old PC?
I do not want to mess up my new PC I just built.

Hey Corey, here is a youtube clip which show all the desktop effects for compiz fusion. I have it enabled on both my laptop and my regular pc.

It's fun stuff to play with, and I especially got used to having a couple of desktops available to switch around in. I actually miss that feature while using MS windows nowadays.

Ubuntu is the distribution of choice, especially for beginners. It's very easy to setup and configures itself very well.
One thing I found in the past (don't know if it still holds) is that it's a good idea to connect the usb devices etc. when you're installing the operating system.
Most things do get picked up automatically later though, I had an issue with a scanner once after I had installed everything. It did get recognized, but I wasn't allowed to use it. Only the admin (root) account has access to it, and I needed to set the user permissions manually so everybody could access it.
Lots of help & info available on the ubuntu forums though, which makes it a good distro to start with.
