I recently registered a second domain name. Is it possible to forward one domain name to http://MyIP/site1 and the second domain name to http://MyIP/site2? Or does each domain name have to go to a unique IP?

 

All a domain name is doing is giving a name to an IP address on a computer somewhere. So, if I'm understanding your question right, it's not possible to give the same IP two different domain names.

 

Yes and yes. Yes, each domain/URL has to be unique for the global DNS records to indentify them. But you can also have them linked via a redirector/forwarder so that when you type in the new domain name, it will bounce you to the the site of your choice. How do you think hackers redirect folks from legit sites to their own sites?

 

As morrison stated, bottom line is you can direct two domains to one site if you wish:

For example...

http://www.weapondepot.com

http://citizensagainstmichaelcrook.com

 

jackson...are you running your server from home? I think I recall you doing that...anyway check out free DNS forwarding: http://www.zoneedit.com/ Give them your server's IP address...Give Godady their DNS Server names...done deal.

I think we are confused (or at least I am)...Jackson do you want 2 URLs to show the same site without the URL name changing? Or do you have 2 URLs that you want different content but on the same server?

 

OK... here's what I want to do...

I have 2 domain names - www.trailaddict.com and www.cycle-cny.com. I have sites setup for both. I want a user to be able to type in either domain name into a browser and be taken to the appropriate site, with the appropriate name in the URL bar.

I've been doing some research and I can do it with PHP, but it's not real smooth. I can also use Apache's namebased serving to do it, however when I do that, I lose the ability to use the computer's IP address to access the root web directory (which I also ned to be able to do).

I've got 2 domain names, 1 server and 2 websites. Both sites live on the one server, one site is setup for each domain name.

I setup name based virtual hosts on my apache server. When I try to access the domain names, everything works great. However, when I try to acess the server via it's IP, it doesn't work.

I read in the apache docs that this is normal. So I setup a vhost for the IP address... same exact way I did it for the domain names, but rather than using a domain name, I used the IP. That didn't seem to work.

Is it possible to still access the server via IP address (from a browser) while using name based vhosts?

 

Me and my roomate currently have a server with 6-7 domain names going to it, most with their own sites. We are using IIS on Win 2K3. If I type the IP into a browser it goes to whatever the default site is in IIS. This makes me think it's an Apache thing. Best of luck.

 

you jsut have to setup apache and used virtual hosting liek you are currently doing, and also setup ip-based hosting.
