DVD burning problems

I picked up a pack of Khypermedia DVD+R 8x discs, and they burn just fine. I'm using a Memorex 16x DoubleLayer burner, and the Nero program that came with it.

The problem I'm having is that after the burn, the DVD disc can only be read by this particular drive. No other DVD drive on ANY computer can read it. So far its happend on 4 out of 6 discs. The other 2 went ok. What could be the problem?

Are you "closing" the disk AND session when the burn is complete? That can help with compatibility.

Also, does the same thing happen with DVD-R disks?

right. what rob said sounds spot-on. most often if you can only read a disc on the drive that wrote it, that means you didn't close it. in my (admittedly older) version of nero, that's a checkmark on the last screen you see before you click Burn. also, if your goal is reading the tracks on a dvd player (ie tv-connected), then read the manual for which data types it supports; some will only do 8.3 file names, whereas others support other ISO modes.

I am closing the disk, and I just bought my first pack of DVD-R's today. So far no problems, but I've never had this wierd problem with DVD+R before. Whats the difference anyways?

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 80% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R and DVD-RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double sided 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW

Basically its a "format"....It would be like trying to play an Xbox game in your playstation....newer DVD players usually play both, I've had success with Sony DVD players and my XBox....but if I take my +r on my dads old generic DVD player it wont play it, it plays -r fine....and some are the other way. Wont play -r and will play +r....I usually use -r since it seems to work on everything in my house....

As you can see from what Rob posted, DVD-R will play on 93% of standalone players....which is the largest percent you can get across the board, thats why I tend to stick with that, unknowingly until now anyway....
