desktop snapshot

Anyone know how I can take a snapshot of my desktop and save it as a .jpg file or any other format for that matter? I'm running XP Pro right now.

Yep.
Hit your PrtScr key on your keyboard.

Then fire up your favorite graphics software and choose new image.
Select the resolution you run your desktop at.

For instance if you run your screen at 1024x768 like I do, select that size for the new image.

After the new image opens up, select "paste" from the file menu.
There is your desktop.

Select save in the file extension of your choice.
JPG works best, and is way smaller than saving it as a BMP file.

If you do not have graphics software, Google "free graphics software" for some.
There are past posts here on some very good image software for zero bucks.
