my .02 and a good link

i c this is an infant board, so here's another opener-

i've got the garmin gpsmap76s. great unit for all around (its a large handheld with a fair amt of memory). i like it for hiking, mtn biking and driving/offroading. however i dont like holding it and punching through the menus while i am driving, even highway. fr*&^%king dangerous! so i am thinking of popping down for a dedicated truck unit with a larger screen.

my recommendations after several years of use: go with a larger color screen (not a handheld), get plenty of memory (the uploaded topo maps RULE), and get it into a RAM mount. other worthwhile considerations include external power and antenae.

i have never found a good gps base map for baja california. but i did stumble on a good website with tutorial to make your own base maps, this is a must for those who want nav beyond the US borders. travelbygps.com - i was able to make a basic map of northern baja in about 20 minutes - i used this map last weekend at the baja 500. rock and roll! cheers-
