CB antennas - where is yours mounted?

I've got a 2' NGP antenna that I mount to my safari rack when wheeling. I'm thinking about getting a standard 4' Firestik and mounting it to my rig somehow so I can use my CB without the safari basket (and dumping/selling the 2' NGP). Where have you all mounted your antennas? Pics would be great.

I am going to mount mine on the front of my ARB. If I didn't have the bumper, then I would put it on the fender, by the hood

I'd rather have it in the back... say on the rear bumper or something, but...

Why on the hood? I thought I remembered reading that reception is supposed to be the best when the antenna is mounted near teh center of the rig... is that true?

I personally have mine mounted to my roof rack. If you want to install it in the rear there are several options. Bob98 has a write up on how to mount it in the rear hatch channel. There are of course several ways to mount it to the rear or front bumper. You can of course get antennas that are magnetic and mount them to your roof or bumper that way. I believe they make ones that mount to glass like a cell phone antenna. If I were you I would go with mounting it to the rear hatch channel.

Ah, bob's got some good info - I like that idea. I wonder if the bracket could be bent so it wasn't so straight... so the "jog" near the antenna mount was larger, thus moving the antenna out of the way of the tailgate. It would obstruct the taillight some, but I'd probably remove teh antenna for normal driving, so...

Jackson,

There is a bracket that is already designed for rear channel mounting of cb antennas. i can't recall the part #, but search firestik's catalog and i'm sure you'll find it. thus, you dont have to go through all the hammering that i did. i was being cheap as usual and fortunately for me, it worked

as far as removing the antenna, i've gotten used to just unscrewing the antenna from the spring coil mount. you could also use a quick release too. but definitely use a spring because of possible metal fatigue.

Bob

only problem with the above mount, for good antena performance you want at least 2/3's the anteana above the roof plane of the vehical.

with it postioned on the back like that, your likely to send/recive great behind you, but get virtually no distance to the front.

Is it a certain percentage of the antenna that should be above the roofline, or at least so many inches?

As I said before, I've got a 2' NGP that I've been very happy with. Of that 24", about 20" of it is above the highest poitn of my rig (roof rack/safari basket). I was planning on getting an antenna that was long enough to have that same 20" or so above the roof line. Bad idea?

you could also go with a whip. You can tie it down when needed, but would have optimum range.
That is why I suggested the bumper or hood for increases range

As you can see here I have more than enough clearance above the roof top... I use a 5' FireStik tunable antenna...

Mine is mounted on a "bandi" mount on the back hinge of the door.
Works out great, and props to Bandi for the design.

4' Firestik II, kind of hard to see in the picture below with the lighting.

102" whip or a 7' skipshooter mounted on a bracket on the left side of the rear bumper. Nothing so fancy as any of the above pictured - just a piece of angle iron bolted to the bumper bolts (needed something hefty to hold a long antenna steady on the freeway). (This was on a 3G). Haven't figured out how to mount an antenna on our new 06 4Runner yet - the mount will have to go down and around the rear bumper cover without any cutting of plastic.

I relocated mine from the side of my TJM bumper to the roof and used the factory cross bars.
